IHG Hotels & Resorts will open luxury InterContinental properties in Melbourne, Canberra and Sydney and re-introduce its Regent brand after a two-decade absence. The company announced plans to rebrand a number of its lower-tier Crowne Plaza Hotels as part of a deal with Salter Brother

The $63 billion Commonwealth Superannuation Corporation has quietly snapped up a Melbourne CBD development site earmarked for a luxury apartment tower to protect the sweeping views of 101 Collins Street, the landmark office tower it owns. CSC bought the ageing 13-storey office building at 63 Exhibition Street for about $40 million from Salta Properties.

The Tarascio family has sold a Melbourne CBD site where a luxury apartment proposal would have obstructed views from the city’s top tower and its tenants.

Australian Bureau of Statistics data show attached housing approvals – driven by apartments, rather than medium-density homes – picked up to 63,648 over the 12 months to January, up 1.5 per cent from a year earlier and marking the first such positive reading since July 2022. Geographically, NSW accounted for most of the recent gain, although Victoria and WA are also picking up.

A pickup in approvals after nearly 2½ years of decline has economists cheering – although developers say further incentives are needed.
