The Eurobodalla Shire Council wants to rezone the land adjacent to the Pretty Point Beach (35-37 Illabunda Street, Malua Bay) as residential. The community says ‘no’!
This park is one of few green spaces adjacent to a dog-friendly beach for kilometres in any direction. Batemans Bay is projected to double in size by 2030, and green space is at a premium.
The community have been using this space for decades, and hope to continue doing so for many years.

RESIDENTS RALLY TO SAVE OUR BEACH-SIDE PARK
Local Malua Bay residents called a rally on Sunday January 27th to discuss the current plans by Eurobodalla Shire Council (ESC) to yet again rezone the park from recreational to a residential development. ESC has conducted several reviews of the park over past years and all have been met with serious objections from the local residents in the area. The rally was attended by over 60 concerned residents who were appalled at the councils plans.
The park, which is on the corner of Illabunda and Merinda streets and fronts Pretty Point Bay, has been zoned for recreational use for over 50 years. The park is opposite Pretty Point Beach, which is now the only dog friendly beach between Batemans Bay and Tomakin Beach. It has been in constant use by locals and day trippers for many, many years.
At the rally, it was resolved to form a committee to compose a submission to present to Eurobodalla Shire council, stressing the importance of the park to the local community and its contribution to the ambience, recreational use and beauty of the area. Tentative proposals from the meeting proposed to form a team of people to submit plans for the park to council. The team “Friends of Pretty Point” (FoPP) adopted the banner “SOS – Save Our Space”.
On the 4th February 2019 a detailed submission was made to council requesting that the concerns of the local community be heard. This is OUR reserve and has been since it was gifted to the council (hence the community) back in the 1960’s. In 1995 council tried to have the area rezoned residential and again the community vigorously objected to any plans for redevelopment.
Why is it being considered again?
