Pictured below the specimen that fooled European scientists!

Sent from Australia to Britain in 1798 the platypus was thought to be a taxidermy prank, with its anatomy seemingly being made up of all different specimens.

The Wotjobaluk Nations knew better, with the mapial being a central part in our waterways, billabongs and rivers as a guardian protector and lore maker.

This big male was captured and safely released last week during the annual wirrap survey

Wirrap Survey on Wotjobaluk Country

Over two nights on the Mt Zero Channel, our NRM team carried out the annual Wirrap (Blackfish) monitoring survey and can now share the results with Community.

34 Wirrap were caught, measured, tagged and safely released.

Each fish was checked for size and condition, helping us understand how this important species is going across Wotjobaluk Country.

Wirrap numbers have been affected by overfishing, increased siltation and competition from introduced fish in Victoria. This makes monitoring and protection so important and helps us keep an eye on their population, habitat health and long‑term survival.

Alongside Wirrap, we also recorded other native river residents including;
Glenelg Spiny Crayfish
Yabbies
Gudgeons
and...a surprise visitor we'll share on Wednesday.

Check out the photos of the big Yellow Belly and one shy Long‑neck Turtle!

Each animal tells us something about the health of our waterways and every survey helps us care for Country.

A big thank you to our partners including, Snobs Creek Hatchery, Arthur Rylah Institute, and Wimmera CMA for working alongside our team to protect and understand our river systems.

Last week four of our BGLC staff members participated in General Firefighter Training, learning lots of things ranging from the science behind bushfires, the equipment used and different tactics for fire control.

The team had a great time getting out there and learning new things.

They can't wait to bring the knowledge and skills they were taught to Country.

Introducing the juvenile female platypus, or ‘puggle’. She has been named Lanangurrk Mapial. Lanangurrk is Wergaia for girl, and mapial is platypus

The platypus is an essential part of many Aboriginal cultures, featuring in Dreamtime stories that are still shared today.

Considered a totem species, the role of the platypus is as protector and lore maker in our waterways, rivers and billabongs.

As populations are dwindling and our waterways are suffering, this project provides an opportunity for Traditional Owners to reconnect and restore health to our precious waterways.

The first video shows her health check and DNA sampling and the second shares her safe release back into the water.

Thanks to partners Wimmera CMA and EnviroDNA for collaboration

The team has been busy checking the health of our waterways and the living systems that depend on them.

Scotty Marks and partners Wimmera CMA and EnviroDNA were focused on platypus in Bun-nah (Mackenzie River) this week and we’re excited to share photos of the monitoring setup and safe release of one curious little volunteer.

After a health check later in the evening, Kevin - a 9 year old male recapture - cruised back into the river without a worry!

Not wanting to steal Kevin’s thunder, next week we’ll introduce a juvenile female ‘puggle’ who stole hearts during her first capture.

Curious and full of spirit, she’ll soon receive her special Wergaia name, honouring her place and our cultural responsibility to Country
