When you work with people to customize their work-life fit, you aren’t imposing anything on them. You’re treating them with respect and trust. Which will be returned. And when talented employees decide to work from home three days a week, they are making a serious commitment to the organization. Instead of working for you, they are working with you. This builds enormous buy-in and a better workplace culture!

Day 2: Now THIS is what I call telecommuting... (Photo credit: DDFic) Most of us, at some point in our lives, have worked in organizations that are rigid and unyielding. You know, cubicle world -- acres of gray carpeting bathed in florescent light. We all know these kinds of work cultures [...]

While a lot of organizations use their phone screenings as glorified interview-scheduling opportunities, the better approach is to use these calls to rule out bad hires.

That way, you can ensure that your organization is dedicating its time and resources to candidates who are actually worth it during the interview process.

Why make the hiring manager waste half an hour talking in person with a clearly unqualified candidate when a proper phone screening could have knocked that candidate out of the running immediately?

While some organizations use their phone screenings as glorified interview-scheduling opportunities, the better approach is to use them to rule out bad hires.

What are you doing to make your company attractive to potential recruits?

What are you doing to retain your key staff?

When you tell candidates in interview that your company offer's flexibility, what does that actually mean?

Hello from my comfy sofa.... :P

I am working from home today, my colleges are able to attend their children's assemblies, we have kids in the office (even my dog last week). True flexibility builds trust & respect and most importantly retains staff.

I have been with Protege Recruitment for 8 years.... Because when they say flexibility, they mean it.. The proof is in the pudding, flexibility (without the guilt trip) = longevity!

Recruitment Tip of The Day:

Get rid of those scripted & predictable interview questions.

Take away the formal interview questions and you can take away the formal scripted answers.

Instead of candidates telling you what you want to hear they feel more comfortable speaking honestly and openly with you about their employment history, why they left their last role and what they are looking for long term.

Forget questions like- " What is your biggest weakness" or " Where do you see yourself in ten years time?" and have a conversation, get to know your potential employee!

"Happy people are more creative and more productive. Some managers think that contented people aren’t the most productive employees, so they prefer to keep the employees a bit anxious about their jobs. However, there is no data showing that anxious, fearful employees are more creative or productive.

Contentment doesn’t mean sitting and staring at wall. That’s what people do when they are bored, and people hate being bored!"

- Harvard psychology professor Daniel Gilbert.

Businesses really need to start thinking about the happiness of their workforce as a way of growing the business! Harvard Business Review had a section on happiness in its Jan-Feb 2012 issue. I
