It's World Haemochromatosis Week and we'd like you to meet David. When a routine health check revealed he had haemochromatosis, he needed regular venesections to manage it.

Instead of letting that blood go discarded, David came to us so his treatment could help save lives. He's not alone in making a massive impact. In fact, over 80% of therapeutic donations from eligible donors are used to help Aussies.

To David and the thousands of incredible therapeutic donors who turn their treatments into lifesaving gifts, thank you.

The human right to healthcare is at the heart of the person-centred, safe and quality care that Australian nurses, midwives and direct-care workers deliver every day and night.

To back that up, it's important for Australia to have its own National Human Rights Act as a legal framework.

This week, Independent MPs have pushed for a Human Rights Act in Federal Parliament.

Introducing this private members' Bill to the House of Representatives was Andrew Wilkie MP - Independent Member for Clark and seconded by Helen Haines MP.

Encompassing adequate income, housing, health care, education, and a healthy environment, an Australian Human Rights Act would articulate what fundamental human rights are available to people, centre people in government decision-making, and ensure respect and dignity for all.

More than 170 organisations are backing the call for a federal Act.
