Celebrating our community for Deaf Awareness Week 🤟

During Deaf Awareness Week in September, our Subiaco team in WA hosted an afternoon tea with customers and an Auslan interpreter to learn more about Deaf culture and communication. Guests included customers who are members of the Deaf community as well as customers who aren’t, bringing together a diverse group to learn from and with each other.

A huge thank you to Jeneva, one of our customers, who led the session. She taught the group to fingerspell the alphabet, and before long everyone was introducing themselves by spelling out their names. Jeneva also shared some surprising facts: every country has its own sign language, even countries that all speak English, and here in Australia some Auslan signs differ from state to state.

To close the session, everyone wrote on a canvas what being inclusive means to them. The answers were thoughtful and inspiring, and they’ll stay on display in the Subiaco office as a reminder of the commitment we share.

Inclusion is at the heart of everything we do at Maxima. When we take the time to understand how people communicate and what they need to thrive, we help build workplaces and communities where everyone can take part, contribute and succeed.

Thank you to everyone who came along and helped make this such a meaningful afternoon, and well done to our Subiaco team for bringing it together.

🌳 Meet Georgia, from climbing trees as a kid to climbing them as a career.

Georgia is a trainee horticulturist working alongside the City of Adelaide’s arborist team, chainsaw in hand, keeping our city's trees safe, strong and healthy.

She's one of a small but growing number of women breaking into arboriculture, and her message to anyone on the fence is simple: "Everyone's capable. Women are definitely strong enough to do the job."

Georgia is part of Maxima's traineeship program - a three-year, earn while you learn pathway that combines real on-the-job experience with study. No two days look the same, and neither does the impact: trainees like Georgia are literally shaping the future of our green spaces.
