๐ŸŒฟ Mabo Day 2026 ๐ŸŒฟ

Today, GMYPPBC honours the legacy of Eddie Koiki Mabo and the landmark decision that recognised the enduring connection of Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander peoples to their Country.

The Mabo Decision overturned terra nullius and paved the way for Native Title recognition across Australia.

This historic decision strengthened our ability to protect cultural heritage, care for Country, create opportunities for our people, and continue exercising our rights and responsibilities as Traditional Owners.

Mabo Day reminds us of the importance of truth, recognition and self-determination, and we take this opportunity to acknowledge all those who fought for the rights we continue to uphold today ๐Ÿ™๐Ÿพ

Thank you for the warm welcome and conversationsโ€”we look forward to staying connected.

๐ŸŒฟ GMY Rangers Justin and Stirling recently travelled to the Daintree to take part in an exciting Thermal Drone and Wildlife Monitoring Workshop alongside Indigenous Ranger groups from across the region.

A big thank you to Terrain NRM for coordinating and delivering this valuable workshop in partnership with James Cook University Centre for Tropical Environmental and Sustainability Science. The hands-on training provided our Rangers with new skills in thermal drone operations, survey design and wildlife monitoring techniques using cutting-edge technology.

The workshop highlighted how thermal drones and AI technology are transforming the way wildlife populations can be detected and monitored, while also creating opportunities to combine modern science with Traditional Ecological Knowledge and caring for Country.

GMY Rangers are looking forward to applying these new skills and our new thermal drone out in the field across GMY Country, expanding its use for monitoring fauna and supporting ongoing land and sea management activities.

It was also a great opportunity to connect, collaborate and share knowledge with other Indigenous Ranger groups committed to caring for Country for future generations.

Update from the dive deck ๐ŸŒŠ๐Ÿคฟ ๐Ÿ›ฅ๏ธ๐Ÿชธ๐Ÿ

Malachai and Chasten are continuing to build their dive skills and qualifications through the Reef Joint Field Management Dive Master training program, creating important pathways for indigenous Rangers to participate in reef management, monitoring and caring for their Sea Country.

Supported and mentored by Reef Unlimited, GBR Biology and the Reef Joint Field Management Program, the training is helping Malachai and Chasten develop practical skills, experience and confidence both in and out of the water.

An extra special part of the training program has been learning alongside our very own Home Grown Reef Star, Freddie Lefoe โญ๏ธ whose leadership and experience continue to inspire the next generation of Rangers.

These opportunities are building strong futures for our Rangers, strengthening capacity for reef management and supporting the ongoing care and protection of the Great Barrier Reef for future generations.

GMY Junior Rangers Strengthen Skills in Safe Machinery Operations with TAFE Queensland

The GMY Junior Rangers commenced their second unit with TAFE Queensland yesterday, building their knowledge and practical skills.

During the training, the junior rangers learned about pre-start safety requirements, including the importance of safety checks, risk awareness, and preparing equipment correctly before use. They also gained hands-on experience in the safe operation of small machinery, developing valuable practical skills for future ranger work.

A special thanks to Vito and the senior rangers for their ongoing mentoring, guidance, and support throughout the training. Their encouragement and willingness to share knowledge is helping the junior rangers grow in confidence while learning new skills and responsibilities on Country.

Itโ€™s great to see the next generation continuing to build strong pathways in ranger work, safety, and environmental stewardship.
