With the announcement that the Eagleby community pool would be shut down after a closed door debate that saw a 5-7 councillor split we have followed up with questions as to why this decision was made.

This is not just about a swimming pool for cooling off on hot summer days. This is about lifestyle, community, neighbourhood identity, CPTED, swimming lessons, school carnivals, exercise, rehabilitation and much more on a social level.

It's also about how our elected representatives choose to engage with and communicate with us. This council promised to be the most transparent ever. This case alone says otherwise.

Through Belinda Thompson - Advocacy for our Community about 10 reasonable questions were asked. For example, we asked;

- Did any of the councillors who voted to shut down the community pool actually visit the site and speak to the local residents?

- What other options besides shutting it down were presented?

- What is the specific reason for the pool being closed?

- Why, if keeping it open is inconceivable, did 5 of the 12 councillors vote that it was viable?

We are happy to say that we received an answer to these and other questions and here they are in bullet-points:

-

That's right - NOTHING! Excuse my facetiousness but this p's me off. We received a reply with ZERO answers to the questions asked.

This was the reasoning from our local councillor-

"I also moved to bring this report into a confidential closed meeting to be able to adequately debate the report with the Mayor and Councillors.

The Regulation and Meeting Code contains provisions which require certain issues to be discussed under a closed session. I encourage you to review the meeting agenda and minutes for specific sections of the Regulation and Meeting Code referenced."

So in other words, even answers to questions that could be discussed publicly are being thrown behind this 'Regulation and Meeting' code.

That's a fine trick.

"Dear Eagleby, today we debated closing down your community pool but we can't say why we debated or what the other options were but know that we have your best interests at heart. It's time to shut your mouths because we know what's best."

⚠️ Update from our petition to Logan City Council requesting CCTV for Mount Warren Park. 2 cameras have been ordered and hopefully we will see them by the end of the year. Currently there are at least 19 camera's in Beenleigh, and 7 in Eagleby. Mount Warren Park has 1, it is on Beaudesert-Beenleigh Rd, past the Windaroo Tavern, opposite Windaroo Cottage. We all need to report any break-ins, theft, suspicious activity or anti-social behaviour to police so we can get more camera's in the future. Our intention is to keep the community safe and a great place to raise families. Policelink www.police.qld.gov.au/reporting or call 131 444.
