⚠️ Paying Above Award Rates?

You could still be underpaying staff.

One of the biggest misconceptions I see is employers assuming that paying above the Award means the Award no longer applies.

Not necessarily.

Allowances, leave loading and other entitlements may still be payable unless they’ve been correctly incorporated into an above Award arrangement.

Two workers lost their lives in a workplace truck incident.

The company was later fined $1.1 million.

Whenever I read stories like this, I find myself asking the same question:

"What did people know before the incident happened?"

Because serious incidents rarely come out of nowhere.

There are usually warning signs.

A shortcut that became normal.

A process that nobody reviewed.

A risk that had been there for years.

Something that everyone saw but nobody challenged.

The reality is that most workplace incidents don't happen because people deliberately choose to be unsafe.

They happen because little things get accepted over time.

And once a risk becomes part of everyday work, people stop seeing it.

The biggest risk in your workplace is often the one everyone has stopped noticing.

If I walked through your workplace tomorrow, what would your team point to and say:

"Yeah, we've always done it that way."

One of the biggest payroll changes in years is coming.

Yet many business owners still aren't sure what Pay Day Super actually means.

In simple terms, employers will need to pay superannuation at the same time employees are paid, rather than weeks or months later as many businesses do today.

For some businesses, that's a simple adjustment.

For others, it could impact payroll processes, cash flow, systems and business operations.

That's why I've teamed up with Deepak Vallabh from First Class Accounts Balgownie to run a practical online session to help employers prepare.

The businesses that start planning now will have more options, fewer headaches and a smoother transition when the changes take effect.

You can't control the 4.75% wage increase.

But you can control:

✔ How effectively your managers lead
✔ How clearly expectations are communicated
✔ How productive your team is
✔ How efficient your systems and processes are
✔ How much rework, waste and frustration exists in your business

I've already seen plenty of discussion about whether the increase is fair.

The Fair Work Commission has made its decision.

The better question is:

Are you getting the return you should from the wages you're already paying?

Because the businesses that navigate wage increases best don't usually focus on the increase itself.

They focus on reducing waste, improving productivity and creating more value from the resources they already have.

That's where I'd be looking first.

The Fair Work Commission has announced a 4.75% increase to modern award wages from 1 July 2026.

For some businesses, that's manageable.

For others, it's another increase on top of rising superannuation, insurance, utilities and operating costs.

Whether you agree with the decision or not, it's happening.

The real question is:

⚡Is your business getting the return it should from the wages you're already paying?

In my experience, the biggest drain on profitability is rarely pay rates alone.

It's unclear accountability, inefficient processes, poor communication, underperformance that isn't addressed, outdated systems and managers spending their days putting out fires.

The businesses that navigate wage increases best aren't usually the ones that cut costs.

They're the ones that improve productivity, leadership, accountability and efficiency.

The wage increase is locked in.

What your business does next isn't.

Day 2 of Growth School with and a room full of business owners who are serious about growth and sharing their knowledge.

One of my biggest takeaways so far:

Don’t execute before you build a strategy.

I’m guilty of seeing an opportunity and wanting to jump straight into action 🙋‍♀️🤣

But if you’re not clear on where you’re going and why, you can end up creating a lot of activity without making real progress.

Still reflecting on one of the sessions from last week’s business conference from my performance coach Jamie Crowe, from .first.step

He spoke about life as four buckets:

🪣 Work
🪣 Family
🪣 Relationships
🪣 Health

The interesting part was his point that for most business owners and leaders, work gets filled first… and then we distribute whatever is left into the other buckets.

But the really interesting part was this:

Your health bucket is the only one that actually creates more capacity for the others.

More energy.
More patience.
More focus.
More resilience.
More presence.

It was a good reminder that looking after yourself isn’t separate to performance, leadership or business growth.

It’s actually what supports all of it.

Two big days at a BNI business owners conference done - and heading home with almost no voice, a brain full of ideas and a heap of great conversations.

One of the biggest reminders over the last couple of days?
Business still comes back to people, relationships and trust.

Already had the opportunity to both give and receive referrals over the conference, which says a lot about the power of getting the right people in the room.

Very grateful for the opportunity, the conversations and the people I’ve got to hang out with over the last couple of days.

ChatGPT is a great tool.

But it’s a sh*t HR manager.

Because HR isn’t just paperwork and templates.

It’s people.
Leadership.
Compliance.
Payroll.
Workplace safety.
Investigations.
Communication.
Judgement.
And managing risk when things get messy.

People aren’t prompts.

How risky is your business… really?

A lot of businesses think they’re “probably okay” when it comes to HR, payroll, contractors and workplace compliance.

Until:
- a staff issue happens
- Fair Work gets involved
- a contractor arrangement gets challenged
- payroll mistakes are uncovered
- leadership issues start impacting culture and performance

The reality is most business owners are busy juggling everything else and often don’t know where the gaps actually are.

So I built a quick HR Reality Check to help SMEs identify potential risks across:
✔ HR systems
✔ payroll & Award compliance
✔ contractor arrangements
✔ leadership
✔ policies & procedures
✔ WHS

It’s practical, quick and designed to give you a clearer picture of where your business currently stands.
