To the Australian Job Seeker Facing Relentless Rejection

If you’re deep in the job search and struggling right now, this is for you.

I speak with job seekers daily who are doing everything right:
↳ Applying for 10+ roles a week
↳ Tailoring their CVs
↳ Sometimes reaching interviews, but receiving no offers
↳ Often hearing nothing at all

This kind of prolonged uncertainty wears you down.
It can take a real toll on your confidence, your mindset, and your mental health.

I’ve worked in recruitment for 11 years in Australia. I’ve also coached people through job changes, redundancies, and long-term unemployment. One thing I’ve seen again and again:

Your beliefs shape your job search more than you realise.

When rejection or silence is all you’re hearing, it’s easy to start thinking:

“I’m not good enough.”
“This gap on my CV has ruined my chances.”
“The market’s broken and there’s nothing I can do.”

But those thoughts don’t just stay in your head.

They change how you feel.
They influence what you do.
And eventually, they affect what happens next.

Here’s the simple framework I use with coaching clients:
Thought → Feeling → Action → Result

Take this belief:

“No one’s going to hire me.”

That thought leads you to pull back.
You slow down your search.
You apply less.
You show up to interviews with less energy or confidence.

And the result? It often reinforces the belief.

But here’s what happens when we shift the story:

“I haven’t found the right match yet.”
“My experience is still valuable, even if the market’s tough.”

That shift changes your energy.
It re-engages your confidence.
And it shows up in how you apply, how you interview, and how you connect with others.

This isn’t about “just staying positive.” It’s about being aware of the thoughts that are holding you back and choosing ones that keep you moving.

If this resonates, reach out. You don’t need to navigate this alone.

I run Coach Recruitment, and I help job seekers get unstuck. That might mean:
→ CV + LinkedIn feedback
→ Interview prep
→ Coaching through career gaps or confidence slumps

If you’re stuck, overwhelmed, or just need someone in your corner, I’m here.

At the start of this year, my wife Katie Benson and I decided to take up tango lessons.

Lesson 1: We were absolute rubbish.

Lesson 2: We were...still absolute rubbish. But at least we laughed every time she trod on my toes.

Trying something new is humbling. It’s awkward. You feel out of your depth. But here’s the thing - you’ll never get better without those clumsy first steps.

The same goes for your career.
• Changing industries? You’ll fumble at first.
• Going for a leadership role? There’ll be a learning curve.
• Dusting off your CV after 10 years? You might not know where to start.

The secret? Persevere, adjust, and keep dancing. If you’re thinking about a new role or career shift and feel like you’re stepping on your own toes, I can help.

Let’s make that first step a little easier. 🎯

Shoutout to Esther at Go Tango in Byron Bay for creating a space where beginners like us can learn, laugh, and keep improving!” 🕺💃

SEACHANGE: MOVING TO BYRON BAY

Katie Benson
Content Lead at TripADeal
Moved from Sydney to the Northern Rivers 2021 🌊

CLOSEST AIRPORT?
30 minutes to Gold Coast and 45 or so down to Ballina.

WHY DID YOU DECIDE TO MOVE TO THE NORTHERN RIVERS?
We were living in the eastern suburbs of Sydney with four kids and rising rents. As awesome as it was to be an adult in Bondi, when you break it down, it’s not easy being a kid there. Not a lot of green space and not a lot of options when it comes to schools.

SO, WHAT ABOUT YOUR BIG CITY JOB?
I had been in my dream job for 12 years working for Paramount Network as a publicist/Senior Publicist. I loved my work, but it also required me to “be on” 24/7. When I became a new mum, I knew I couldn’t keep up that level of intensity.

HOW DID YOU FIND WORK IN THE REGIONS?
I had a case of divine timing. Just as we were ready to move, Stone & Wood Brewing were looking for someone for their Communications and PR role. I rolled the dice and landed another job that was the stuff of dreams.

WHAT'S THE LOCAL JOB MARKET LIKE?
Like anywhere, it depends what you do! The Gold Coast is a bigger market than the Northern Rivers/Byron, but the opportunities in my field of communications and PR are definitely smaller than what they are in a capital city.

I’ve found that Byron has a lot of small-medium sized businesses or solopreneurs, so there’s not a lot of room for growth. That being said, I’ve been lucky enough to find two great jobs within the Byron Industrial estate.

IS WORKING REMOTE POPULAR IN THE AREA?
There’s certainly a lot of people here making remote life work for them. We also know a few people in Pottsville who split their time between here and Sydney and friends who make the two-hour drive to Brisbane a couple of times a week to keep the big city salary.

HAVE YOU CONSIDERED REMOTE LIFE?
It’s definitely a consideration living in the regions, but I enjoy being around other people. I certainly hope businesses keep forward-thinking when it comes to flexibility, it makes regional life a bigger possibility for more people.

WHAT'S YOUR COMMUTE LIKE?
My commute is 30 minutes door-to-door, which is less than any of my Sydney commutes, and there’s not one traffic light on the way.

HOW DID YOU SETTLE INTO YOUR NEW COMMUNITY?
The first year was tough. It felt like Mark and I were a bit of an island, but we’ve been slowly making friends through work, schools and the gym. The recent Anzac Day March through town, standing in the sun and taking in something meaningful together with new friends, confirmed what this move was all about.

BEST PART OF WHERE YOU CALL HOME?
The natural beauty and the amazing food culture in our small town. We have the two-hat Pipit Restaurant and an amazing Japanese diaspora that head up the incredible Izakaya Potts and Konoha Sushi

BEST COFFEE SHOP?
Hands down Black Drop Cafe. Great coffee, delicious menu and the absolute friendliest service. James and crew are the best.

WHAT ARE THE SCHOOLS LIKE
We’re blessed with two amazing primary schools in Pottsville, but the nearest high schools, both private and public, are half an hour away. Putting the kids on the bus for that long each day was one of the big adjustments to our family life.

HAVE YOU FOUND ANY DOWNSIDES TO LIFE IN THE REGIONS?
Being away from family and friends is the first obvious drawback. Also, getting to places with a bit of nightlife/restaurants is generally a 20-minute drive from where we are.

WHAT'S THE BIGGEST MISCONCEPTION YOU'VE FOUND ABOUT LIVING IN THE REGIONS?
The idea that life is cheaper in the regions, certainly doesn’t apply here. We live in a tourism hotspot – the payoff for how beautiful it is, is that the prices are set for that market, i.e. – city prices.

BEST TIP FOR PEOPLE LIVING IN THE REGIONS?
Local Facebook groups are a treasure trove. I would never have thought to join one in Sydney, but up here, they’re the lifeblood of local community. People reach out to find homes, jobs, babysitters…and also share the gossip on which kids have been rude to adults in town 😝
