Not all industries are hiring equally right now. The latest SEEK data shows a divide in Australia’s hiring market and it’s not where everyone expects.

📈 Driving the growth:
Construction and Industrial roles are leading the charge, with steady momentum also building in Retail & Consumer Products (+2.2%) and Sales (+1.8%).

📉 Lagging behind:
Public sector hiring is softer, with Government & Defence declining (-1.8%) month-on-month.

What does this actually mean?
This market is less about volume… and more about where the demand sits. If you’re hiring, align your expectations with what’s actually moving. If you’re a candidate, the opportunities are there, just not across every industry.

According to the latest data from SEEK, Australia’s hiring market is showing signs of stabilisation.

Job ads lifted slightly in April (+0.2% month-on-month), although they remain 1.9% lower year-on-year. At the same time, applications per role also dipped (-0.2% m/m, -2.9% y/y), signalling that while competition is still high, it’s starting to ease and move back toward more normal levels.

What does this mean for you? We’re shifting out of peak candidate competition and into a more balanced market, but strong hiring strategies still matter.
