Foundation Broken Hill Welcomes BHP Chairman to Broken Hill

Foundation Broken Hill was honoured to welcome Mr Ross McEwan CBE, Chairman of BHP, to Broken Hill this week.

During his visit, Mr McEwan had the opportunity to experience our unique city, learn more about its rich mining history and heritage, and gain an insight into the community that has played such a significant role in Australia's mining industry.

The visit provided a wonderful opportunity to showcase Broken Hill and highlight the importance of preserving our mining heritage for future generations.

Foundation Broken Hill Chairman, Mr John Lynch OAM, together with fellow Directors, was delighted to host Mr McEwan along with Mr James Agar and Ms Gabrielle Notley also from BHP and share the history, achievements and future aspirations of our community.

Foundation Broken Hill sincerely thanks Mr McEwan for taking the time to visit our city and for his interest in Broken Hill's history, heritage and future.

We are incredibly proud of our city and always welcome the opportunity to share its remarkable story.

Tomorrow, Broken Hill comes together to remember and honour those who have gone before us.

On the 8th October 1902, two young miners Leopold Campbell and Thomas Jordan, were tragically killed on the Line of Lode. Their bodies were never recovered.

In their memory, and in honour of all those who have lost their lives on our mines or who have died as a result of mining-related injuries or disease, the MEU and BHCC come together each year for the Miners Memorial Service.

📍 Miners Memorial, Line of Lode, Broken Hill
📅 Thursday, 8 October 2026
⏰ 5:00pm

The service will include the BIU and Cameron Pipe Bands and the Scouts raising the flags.

There will also be guest speakers, Deb Hunt (reading a poem), Christine Adams (a reading of the history of 100 years ago), and a prayer by Rev Helen Ferguson.

We invite the Broken Hill community to join us as we remember, reflect and pay tribute to the miners who have gone before us.

We have an amazing group of men who volunteer their time at the Miners Memorial, most days, to speak with tourists and locals. They tell the story of Broken Hill, they talk about the history of mining, the lives lost on the mine and point out all of the beautiful heritage buildings we have here in Broken Hill, Australia First Heritage listed city and show what is mined beneath where they stand.

Foundation Broken Hill would like to say a huge thank you to these volunteers. The past few days have been extremely busy, sometimes very cold and at times windy at the Line of Lode and they show up, answer all of your questions and talk for hours.

The volunteers are extremely well received and people walk away knowing a lot more about our beautiful city.
