Joern, Linus and Lauris had been in Australia for three weeks when they spotted one of our posts on Facebook and decided to reach out. They were 19 to 21 years old, fresh out of high school in Germany and hadn't had much luck finding work.

Within weeks we had organised their flights from Melbourne to Brisbane, a train from Brisbane airport to Maryborough and someone to pick them up when they arrived. They started work at a meat processing facility shortly after and when that placement wrapped up, we already had their next one lined up so they could stay together and keep moving.

"It was hard work, but we came here to work and knowing that RWM had our backs if things changed made it a lot easier to just get on with it," Joern said.

They worked four days a week, saved enough to hit their goal within two months, bought a car together and spent their days off driving to the beach and camping along the coast. In late February we supported them in taking a month off to drive from Kilcoy all the way up to Cairns before returning to finish their placement.

They are now heading home to Germany and already talking about coming back. We think that says it all.

Eleven employees travelled thousands of kilometres from the Solomon Islands to regional South Australia through the Pacific Australia Labour Mobility scheme to work in timber manufacturing, many of them leaving the country for the very first time.

Our site manager Nicole has been with them from the moment they arrived, helping them settle into their roles and become part of their local community. That level of support makes a difference to people who are far from home and somewhere new.

One of the Fijian workers on site took the newcomers under his wing from early on, someone who knew what it felt like to arrive somewhere unfamiliar, and made sure they didn't have to figure it out alone.

Today is Samoa’s Independence Day and we want every one of our Samoan Pacific Australia Labour Mobility scheme employees to feel recognised, no matter where they are in Australia.

While many are far from home, today is not only about celebrating Samoa’s independence, but also the strength, resilience and service they show to their families and communities every day. We recognise the commitment it takes to be here, the time away from loved ones and the role they play in building a better future.

We also echo the words shared by our Cultural Welfare Officer and Samoan Chief, Fa’alafi Pa Enari. Even when they are far from home, Samoa is carried with them each day in the way they live their values, support their families and show up for one another.

To all our Samoan employees, thank you for everything you give while you are away from home.

Picture what it’s like arriving in Australia as part of the Pacific Australia Labour Mobility scheme, travelling overseas and stepping off a plane here for the very first time.

Many Pacific Islanders and Timorese who join the scheme come with a picture in their minds of what life and work in Australia will look like, as well as a mix of emotions, excitement for the opportunity that lays ahead. Alongside this are the nerves that come with leaving home and saying goodbye to their families for an extended period of time.

That’s why the role our site managers play from day one matters so much. They’re there at the airport when our employees land, welcoming them and building trust and rapport from the very first interaction. The RWM way goes beyond mobilising people to site, we build a strong team that live and work alongside each other over the next four years.

When you feel supported, everything else falls into place, your work, your routine and staying connected to your community through sport and church.

Our CEO Brad Seagrott is in Port Moresby this week for the PNG-Australia Approved Employer Expo 2026, meeting with communities and talking about what working in Australia through the PALM scheme looks like.

Brad spoke about what makes our workforce stand out and it's something we see every single day. Our employees are reliable, they bring a positive attitude and they show up. This is because the RWM way is built on genuine support for our people. That's not just us saying it either.

Our most recent workforce survey backed it up, with 92% of our Pacific Australia Labour Mobility scheme workers rating our Cultural Welfare Officers as extremely or very helpful and workers consistently telling us they feel part of a community and want to keep working with us.

We’ll continue to spend time on the ground, connecting with local communities and listening to the people who are part of these programs because it’s through these conversations that we continue to learn and improve our support for both workers and clients.

Every Sunday in Wodonga, a group of Fijian Pacific Australia Labour Mobility scheme workers come together at St Stephen’s Uniting Church. That’s something Lipo helped organise not long after he arrived.

He left Vatulele Island in Fiji in July of 2025 to work in meat processing, looking for something steadier for his family back home.

Since then, a lot has changed. He’s progressed into a Quality Assurance role at work and outside of it, has taken on a big part in bringing his local community together. He now leads the Albury Wodonga Border Community Committee and was recently recognised with a Leadership Award.

Thousands of kilometres away, his kids are in school and his family is supported. When he returns home, he’ll carry the skills and confidence he’s gained from these opportunities with him.

Coming to Australia to work through the Pacific Australia Labour Mobility scheme is a big decision to make. There’s a lot that comes with it, not just the opportunity, but the unknown of moving to a completely new country too.

What makes a difference is how supported you feel from the very beginning.

Before anyone travels to Australia, RWM spends time meeting you in person, talking the whole process from arrival, through to life in Australia and setting goals, making sure you feel ready for the journey ahead. That support stays with you through the preparation, the journey and when you arrive here.

And once you land in Australia, some for the very first time, you’re not left to figure things out on your own. Our site managers and cultural welfare officers are there at the airport to meet you, help you get settled, and support you as you adjust.

They’re often some of the first familiar faces you meet and they become your go-to over time. From taking you to your new home or somewhere to stay before you head to your next destination, to helping you settle in and find your feet in those early days.

Edman, Kennedy, Michael, David and Waisea from Papua New Guinea and the Fiji Islands have spent the last four years living and working in Gundagai, New South Wales through the Pacific Australia Labour Mobility scheme Australia Labour Mobility scheme, supporting one of our food processing clients while building a life far from home.

Over that time, they’ve become part of the rhythm of the town, getting to know locals, showing up to community events and sharing parts of their culture from PNG and Fiji. This has been especially visible through the Christmas parades, where they’ve performed traditional dances and taken the time to talk with the community about life back home.

Four years is such a long time to be away from home, loved ones and the way they’ve shown up for hard days of work and remained motivated over that time hasn’t gone unnoticed, in the relationships they’ve built, their consistency at work, and their presence in the community.

We’re incredibly proud of how they’ve integrated into the Gundagai community and the impact they’ve had along the way. We wish them all the best as they get ready to return home.

Today is Timor-Leste's Restoration of Independence Day, marking 24 years of independence and we wanted to make sure our Timorese Pacific Australia Labour Mobility scheme workers felt it no matter where they are in Australia. We know how much you give by being here. The hard work, being away from your families, supporting the people you love back home.

Last night we came together online, where Father Anacleto led a devotion and Her Excellency Inês Almeida, Timor-Leste’s Ambassador to Australia, spoke directly to them about what this day means, reflecting on the sacrifices behind it and the role they each play in supporting their families and representing Timor-Leste while they’re away from home.

To every one of our Timorese workers, thank you for everything you give while you are away from home.

One of the things we hear most from our Pacific Australia Labour Mobility scheme workers is that they want to learn and grow while they are here.

Through our own PALM survey, we found that 98% of our workers have either completed, started or want to do training and qualification programs while working in Australia through the Pacific Australia Labour Mobility scheme.

That tells us a lot about the reliable people who come to work with us at RWM. They are not just here for a job alone. They are here to build skills, grow their experience and take skills home with them to build further opportunities for themselves and their families.

We take that seriously. From traineeships on site to formal qualifications, we work to make sure our workers have access to the opportunities they are looking for.
