Recruitment isn't always lost to a competitor. Sometimes it's lost in the process.
We see it every week.
Strong candidates don't usually disappear because of salary. They disappear because the hiring process creates too much friction.
Here are five of the biggest mistakes costing businesses great talent:
• Moving too slowly. Delayed decisions don't just lose candidates to competitors. They can also make candidates feel their experience wasn't valued or that they weren't the right fit, causing them to disengage before you've made an offer.
• Over-interviewing. Three, four or five interview stages rarely improve hiring decisions. They usually just increase the chances of losing your preferred candidate.
• Not giving clear feedback. Candidates appreciate honesty. Even a quick update keeps them engaged and protects your employer brand.
• Hiring for the CV instead of capability. Experience matters, but attitude, adaptability and potential often determine long-term success.
• Waiting until it's urgent. The strongest hiring strategies start before there's an immediate vacancy. Building relationships early gives you options when projects ramp up.
If you're finding it harder to secure the right people for the job, it may not be the talent pool that's the problem, it could be the hiring process.
