Many of us have felt it, particularly over the last year.
But, can you imagine? Being an Olympian, and feeling so overwhelmed, you just can’t keep going?
Particularly after spending years, no DECADES, preparing for this one moment?
In June, Naomi Osaka withdrew from the French Open.
Why?
Mental health reasons.
Yesterday, Simone Biles withdrew from the Olympics.
Why?
Mental health reasons.
Someone commented on Biles’ withdrawal, saying, “Grow up and get on with it! Stop your whining.”
Maybe we should all get on with it and stop whining.
Or maybe, we should celebrate the fact that people we see as superhuman-like role models really are human.
And if they can be human and acknowledge their challenges, maybe we should too.
While we are at it, let’s take this lesson into the workplace.
At work and in school, look after your peers and colleagues. Let’s normalise asking, “R U OK?”
Companies, look after your employees.
Mental health greatly impacts workplace happiness and job satisfaction.
And isn’t that what we want? Happy, healthy, satisfied employees?
Simone, I’m sorry you won’t climb to the top of the podium in Tokyo.
But I think your last Olympic appearance yielded the greatest win imaginable for those of us watching.
You deserve the gold in my book.
