There’s nothing quite like getting out on the land and seeing innovation up close.

During a recent visit to Rockhampton, Justin Heaven had the chance to see a new sweet potato variety that’s not yet on the market — an exciting glimpse at what’s ahead for the sector.

It’s been a strong month at Agri Talent, with placements made across several key areas of agribusiness.

From senior leadership through to operational and technical hires, we’ve been proud to connect great businesses with the people they need to move forward with confidence.

Here’s a snapshot of some of our recent placements across the country.

At the Bowen Gumlu Growers Association workforce planning forum, Agri Talent’s Justin Heaven spoke about a challenge many agribusiness leaders are facing right now: how to stay ahead in a market where skilled talent is increasingly hard to secure.

The key takeaway? Workforce planning works best when it happens before the pressure is on.
• Plan ahead – the strongest businesses are building workforce strategies well before demand peaks
• Build talent pools – known, assessed candidates give businesses faster access to quality talent
• Rethink succession planning – it’s not just about replacement, but building leadership depth across the business
• Use market insight early – talent mapping and skills benchmarking lead to better decisions before hiring becomes urgent.

For senior leaders, the shift is not simply from reactive hiring to proactive hiring. It’s from treating recruitment as a transaction to treating workforce strategy as a competitive advantage.

That’s where Agri Talent adds value – helping businesses combine internal planning with external market insight to build stronger, more sustainable teams.

Thank you to Gillian Russell and the Bowen Gumlu Growers Association for the opportunity to be part of the conversation.

A rare opportunity to step into a leadership role overseeing large scale, progressive cropping operations across both irrigated and dryland systems.

Join a well-resourced, forward-thinking business where innovation and productivity drive decision making. Long term sustainability sits at the core of the operation, shaping how the business continues to grow.

If you're ready to take the next step and make a real impact, this is a conversation worth having >>

Agri Talent was proud to attend the Rural Aid long lunch at Rivershed alongside our sister company, Agri Labour Australia.

It was a meaningful event bringing together people who care deeply about the future of rural Australia and the communities at the heart of it. Supporting organisations such as Rural Aid is important to us, not only because of the vital work they do for farmers and regional communities, but because a strong agricultural sector depends on strong people and support networks.

We’re grateful to have joined the conversation and to stand alongside others who are committed to backing Australian agriculture in practical and lasting ways.

Thank you to Rural Aid for hosting such an important event and for the ongoing impact you continue to make across the industry.

The new generation of ag professionals are approaching their careers with a strong sense of purpose.

As April Cavanagh notes in this clip from our latest Agri Talent Talks, they are “motivated by feeding and clothing the nation”. Ultimately contributing to something bigger than themselves.

It’s a perspective that’s reshaping the industry and bringing fresh energy, new expectations and a deeper connection to impact.

For agribusinesses, understanding what drives this generation is key to attracting and retaining future talent.

We’re pleased to share that Agri Talent’s managing director, Kelli McDougall, will be speaking at the 2026 Hydroponic Farmers Federation Conference, taking place at Pullman Melbourne Albert Park from 4–6 May.

Kelli will present a session titled “Seeding, Scaling & Sustaining Talent in Controlled Environment Ag”, exploring one of the biggest commercial challenges facing intensive horticulture today – workforce capability.

As controlled environment agriculture continues to expand across Australia, the conversation around labour is shifting. It’s no longer just an operational issue; it’s a strategic one that directly impacts productivity, margin and long-term growth.
In this session, Kelli will share practical insights for hydroponic and intensive growers on how to approach workforce planning with the same discipline applied to production systems. The discussion will cover:

– Positioning your business as an employer of choice in a competitive labour market
– Why retention strategies deliver stronger commercial outcomes than constant recruitment
– Building internal capability pipelines to support expansion
– The connection between culture, performance and business results.

If you’re attending the conference, we’d love for you to join the session and continue the conversation around building stronger teams for the future of controlled environment agriculture.

Great conversations and valuable insights were aplenty at the recent Toowoomba and Surat Basin Enterprise Contractor Connector event, held at Howard Smith Wharves.

Agri Talent’s Justin Heaven was in attendance, joining industry peers to hear from Penny Hall of Arup. Her reflections on leadership, legacy and city-shaping projects – particularly Brisbane’s Olympic journey and the vision for Victoria Park – offered a compelling perspective on the role of long-term thinking in major developments.

Events such as this are a great reminder of the importance of collaboration, not just within agriculture but across industries shaping the future of our regions and cities.

A big thank you to TSBE for hosting another insightful event and bringing together such a strong network of professionals.
