Hear what recent 2020 draft pick .billingsley has to say about his pathway into the MLS. - “Leaving my home and family at 18 to travel to the U.S. was one of the hardest decisions I have ever made. I was terrified to be starting over in a foreign country 10,000 miles away from everything I was familiar with. However, it was by far the smartest thing I have ever done. UCSB has provided me with an outstanding education, I was able to complete my degree in Sociology while also competing at the highest level. As an 18-year old, I found myself playing in packed stadiums filled with 14,000 people cheering me and my teammates on. The soccer team quickly became a family to me and showed me the best ways to succeed academically, athletically, and socially. My freshman year I made the Big West All American team, which resulted in me gaining global recognition. In the following years I went on to play for the New Zealand U23 team, traveling the globe and ultimately qualifying for the 2020 Olympics. Following my final season at UCSB I was selected first round in the 2020 MLS Superdraft by Minnesota United.”

Making the move over to the US College system wasn’t easy for Noah Billingsley. Hear from national champion and 2020 MLS Draft Pick Derek Waldeck about his experience at college “I always knew I wanted to attend college and complete my degree so that no matter what happened with soccer. Taking care of my education was my first priority. Stanford far exceeded all my expectations - it pushed me to new heights academically and challenged me to become the best athlete I could at the same time. Finishing my human biology degree at Stanford before pursuing professional soccer has truly set me up for life and I would do it all again in a heartbeat. The soccer program stretched me as a student of the game and helped me reach new limits that I didn’t think were previously possible. In the short time I’ve been with FC Dallas and North Texas SC, I have seen some of the skills I mastered at Stanford come to fruition. Adaptability, perseverance, and breaking barriers were all things that allowed me to find success at Stanford, and I expect those same things to help me at the professional level. And the best part is that when my soccer career comes to an end, I’ll still have plenty to look forward to as I begin another career with my Stanford degree." @ Stanford University
