R U OK? Day may have passed, but the conversation shouldn’t.

Across apprenticeships, labour hire and recruitment, much of what we do revolves around work. We talk about new opportunities, career goals, performance, challenges and what comes next.

But behind every application, apprenticeship, placement or role is a person. And there’s always more going on in someone’s life than what we see at work.

That’s why checking in matters.

It’s noticing when someone isn’t quite themselves. It’s creating space for an honest conversation, taking the time to listen and checking in again, not just once.

R U OK? Day is an important reminder that a simple question can open the door to a life-changing conversation. It doesn’t have to be complicated, and it shouldn’t be something reserved for one day of the year.

Asking the question matters and don’t stop at the first ‘all good, mate’.

We’re excited to announce the shortlisted nominees for our First Year Apprentice Award at the FHR Apprentice Awards & Graduation Night, happening on 23 October 2026 at the MCG!

Starting an apprenticeship means stepping into a new industry, learning on the job, taking on new challenges and building your skills from the ground up.

This award recognises our first years who have stood out through their attitude, commitment, growth and willingness to learn throughout the year.

A huge congratulations to all our nominees! We can’t wait to celebrate their achievements alongside our apprentices, host employers and the FHR team this October.

We joined our long-term partners, Martin Brower ANZ, at their second Rodeo event at their Dandenong facility.

Professional CMV drivers, warehouse workers and forklift operators came together for a range of specialised skills and safety challenges. The day was filled with plenty of teamwork, friendly competition and laughs along the way. Our labour hire team also took part in the fundraising activities, with Semra, our Account Manager, sending Dylan, Martin Brower’s Transport Manager, straight into the freezing water 😂🥶

We had a great time connecting with the people we work alongside and celebrating the strong relationship our teams have built together.

A great opportunity to bring our FHR Apprentice and Trade teams together in Melbourne for our annual conference.

With our interstate teams in the room, we were able to bring together different experiences and perspectives across our field, management and leadership teams. It was a valuable opportunity to share ideas, learn from one another and explore new ways to collaborate.

The conference gave us the chance to reflect on how we can continue strengthening the support we provide to our apprentices, host employers and each other.

Working as one team, aligning our goals and building on each other’s strengths puts us in a stronger position to create positive outcomes for the people and businesses we support.

We’re looking forward to putting these conversations into action and continuing to build a stronger future for our Apprentice and Trade division!

We're excited to announce Dave Thornton as our emcee for the FHR Apprentice Awards and Graduation Night 2026.

If Dave looks familiar, there’s a good chance you’ve seen him on The Project, Spicks and Specks, Would I Lie To You? or Upper Middle Bogan. We’re looking forward to handing him the mic and letting him do what he does best!

While he takes care of the laughs, we'll take care of the rest. To our current apprentices, graduates and host employers, please join us and fill your bellies up with dinner with an open bar and perhaps go home with an award or a prize!

Our Labour Hire team recently got together in Adelaide for a team dinner. Korean BBQ was definitely the perfect way to enjoy a meal together and catch up face to face away from teams.

With our teams working across different locations, making time to connect in person is important. Good communication and strong relationships are a big part of what we do at FHR. Both within our teams and when supporting our clients and candidates.

A great night of good food, plenty of laughs and even better company. Because great service starts with a great team.

A huge congratulations to Sahil Phogat, who goes by Sonny, on completing his Electrical Apprenticeship with us!

To celebrate, our SA State Manager, Shannon Easter, visited Sahil to congratulate him and present him with a certificate of completion and a tool voucher as a token of recognition for his hard work and achievement.

We’ve seen Sahil gain valuable experience in the commercial electrical space with SKS Technologies, who were a great fit for the career path he wanted to pursue. Now qualified, Sahil has his sights set on continuing his career in commercial electrical while learning, developing and building his experience along the way.

Sahil described his apprenticeship with us as a great experience through and through, particularly valuing the support from our team, who were always a phone call or message away whenever he needed assistance.

We’re proud to see that his next chapter will continue with his host employer, SKS Technologies. It’s always rewarding to see our apprentices’ hard work and commitment pay off as they build their skills, experience and confidence along the way.

It’s been a pleasure to be part of your journey, Sonny. We wish you all the best in the next step of your career!

The first Tunnel Boring Machine (TBM) officially began tunnelling from the St Mary’s / Clovelly Park site in late June, and our National Manager of Group Training, Paddy Courtney, had the unique opportunity to walk through the launch site of the Torrens to Darlington Project just before its maiden journey.

Thanks to Paddy, we were able to get a glimpse inside the tunnels and see the scale of this incredible project firsthand.

The day kicked off early, standing beneath the 500-tonne green gantry crane that lowered the TBM cutterhead 20 metres into the Southern Precinct launch box at Clovelly Park. From there, Paddy explored the launch site and tunnels, getting a firsthand look at the massive excavators and enclosed conveyor systems supporting the TBM as it carved its 4.5km journey through the Southern tunnels.

Seeing the scale of the project up close before the launch really put the T2D project into perspective.

The T2D has not only achieved an engineering milestone but has created opportunities for people across the state, extending from local workers, Aboriginal workers, apprentices and trainees through to those looking to build new careers or re-enter the workforce.

This major project is helping to build a lasting skills legacy for South Australia, and we’re proud to be able to support T2D and played a part in delivering one of the state’s most significant infrastructure projects.

The electrical industry is currently booming, with major construction projects underway and demand for skilled tradespeople higher than ever. This surge in growth is exciting, offering abundant opportunities for those entering the field. However, as we’ve seen in the past, the industry is also prone to volatility, and the landscape can shift quickly - large companies can go into administration, causing mass layoffs and uncertainty.

Last week FHR had the pleasure of attending the Autumn Networking Luncheon hosted by STK Business – St Kilda’s fantastic networking program. The event, held at the brilliant Crown Palladium, brought together a room full of driven, like-minded business leaders.
Where excellent entertainment and inspiring conversations made for a memorable afternoon. A standout moment was the discussion panel on the impact of Artificial Intelligence in business. It was an important reminder that while AI is a powerful tool, creativity remains a distinctly human strength.
A big thanks to Daniel Russo and Karl Slaviero from St Kilda Football Club for pulling together such a high-calibre event!
