Today is Mabo Day

(Shared via deborahN )

Today, we honour the legacy of Eddie Koiki Mabo and the historic impact of his fight for native title.

Mabo Day recognises the landmark High Court decision that overturned the legal doctrine of terra nullius.

The decision acknowledged that Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander peoples held land and sea rights based on their traditions and unbroken connection to Country.

Born in Mer Island, Koiki Mabo’s determination and advocacy created lasting change for generations to come. His legacy continues to inspire pride in culture, connection to Country and the ongoing journey towards recognition and justice.

Happy Mabo Day! 🎉

We had to move inside for our flag raising ceremony for Festa della Repubblica with the Ballarat Italian Association Inc. today but were still able to sing the national anthem and enjoy a coffee and biscotti. Thanks to the students from Siena Catholic Primary for braving the inclement weather to raise the Italian flag 🇮🇹 at the Intercultural Garden.
