Education plays a part.

Only 43% of countries worldwide have integrated Media and Information Literacy into their national curricula. As AI, digital platforms and information overload transform how learners access information, these skills are more essential than ever.

Every lesson that helps learners question information, evaluate sources, recognize misinformation and understand AI can strengthen their ability to think critically and participate responsibly.

UNESCO’s Media and Information Literacy Curriculum gives educators a practical framework and resources to bring these competencies into learning, with modules covering everything from misinformation and digital citizenship to AI, social media and privacy. Learn more:

Creators play a part.

Nearly 46% of people now get news from digital content creators, highlighting their growing influence in shaping how people understand the world.

With that influence comes an opportunity — and a responsibility — to create, share and engage with information thoughtfully. Media and Information Literacy can help creators assess sources, recognize misinformation and produce content that informs, connects and inspires.

UNESCO works with digital content creators through research, training and practical tools. Its Behind the Screens study explores creators’ practices and challenges, while the online course How to Be a Trusted Voice Online builds skills for ethical and trustworthy content creation. Journalism plays a part.

7 in 10 people believe journalists deliberately mislead the public, highlighting the urgent need to rebuild trust in journalism.

Trust grows when audiences can understand how information is produced, verified and shared. Media organizations play a key part in making that process more transparent.

UNESCO’s Media and Information Literacy Multimedia Toolkit for Media offers practical guidance, case studies and tools to help media organizations integrate MIL into their policies, programmes and content — from audience engagement and transparency to ethical use of AI. From safeguarding priceless artefacts to introducing 3D technology and ethical AI, UNESCO is helping transform the future of Afghanistan’s culture through its initiatives at the National Museum.

With the support of the Government of Japan and its technical expertise, national professionals were trained in digital documentation, Koshan period objects were conserved, museum facilities were improved, and a dedicated Women’s Park was created. These initiatives represent part of UNESCO’s continued efforts to strengthen the protection of Afghanistan’s rich cultural legacy.

Every artefact tells a story. Every skill reinforced keeps that story alive. Supporting Afghanistan’s cultural heritage means investing in its people, identity and future. Together, we can ensure that this extraordinary legacy continues to inspire generations and remains part of our shared human history.

Rising above the Hari River valley, the Minaret of Jam, a UNESCO World Heritage site, is an extraordinary testament to Afghanistan’s history and cultural legacy. Today, this exceptional monument faces serious risks due to natural hazards and conservation challenges that require urgent attention.

With funding from the ALIPH Foundation, UNESCO has advanced efforts to monitor the Minaret, mitigate flood risks and support the local community. Regular analysis of data from structural monitoring devices helps specialists understand the monument’s condition and inform the conservation planning and long-term stability of the Minaret. Meanwhile, a significant milestone has been achieved with the completion of the bridge, drawing on international and national expertise through South-South cooperation, to improve access for emergency interventions and provide safer, more reliable connections for local communities.

A further important step is also underway by the Aga Khan Foundation, with funding from the ALIPH Foundation, ensuring the structural stability of the Minaret and its long-term conservation.

These initiatives demonstrate what sustained commitment, technical expertise and partnership can achieve. UNESCO, ALIPH and the Aga Khan Trust for Culture each contribute to the effort to safeguard this irreplaceable UNESCO World Heritage Site, while supporting the safety and livelihood of the people who reside in its setting.

Protecting the Minaret of Jam means protecting a legacy for all humanity and ensuring it can endure for generations to come.
