The Southern African Fraud Prevention Service and a background screening company warn job seekers that they could face jail time should they lie in their CV.

Job hunting and not having any luck? Your lack of experience is your main concern, so you pretend that your holiday in December was actually spent interning at a small media house. It’s a little white lie after all and employers don’t really check, right?

Wrong.

In our competitive employment market, job seekers are feeling more pressurised than ever to stand out from the crowd, and may resort to lying on their CVs to appear more qualified than they are. This is actually considered to be fraud.

According to City Press, Carol Mcloughlin of the Southern African Fraud Prevention Service warned job seekers that CV fraud is a criminal offence and perpetrators could end up with criminal records.

She said that 1 751 cases of employee fraud had been listed on the organisation’s Shamwari fraud database in 2013. This database enables SAFPS members to check if a person has been involved in fraud in the past.

Jenny Reid, CEO of background screening company iFacts says this is not a new law. She warns that lying in any document, no matter how “small” the lie, is fraud and could land you in jail. A minor amendment to your work experience isn’t any less of an offence than lying about being qualified.

“There’s no such thing as a ‘white lie’. We recently had a case of a lady who claimed she had gone “travelling” for six months. It turned out that she had been jailed for fraud she had committed in the work place. If you’ve got reason to lie in a job application, then you’ve got something to hide, which is a risk for the employer” she told the paper.

Job seekers are aware that when applying for jobs, there may be a check to verify that the information provided is true, but often ignore this, Jenny says. She encourages employers to check every aspect of all applicants’ CVs and verify their qualifications.

Job seekers lying on their CVs is not something that only occurs at junior levels. Recent allegations of this kind of fraud at a senior level include theNational Prosecuting Authority raising questions about the validity of the matric certificate of newly appointed SABC COO Hlaudi Motsoeneng.

Danie Strydom, CEO of Qualifications Verification Services says, “our biggest problem is the fact that some candidates fudge their own qualifications by adding subjects they have not studied for, or increasing their symbols. The other problem concerns forged degrees and diplomas that are available on the Internet.

Forged qualifications are often printed on high-quality paper and lately even include holograms and seals of the universities they claim to come from.”

When your potential employer finds out about your lie your reputation will be tarnished. It reflects poorly on your character and breaks the unspoken trust between you and the potential employer. Be honest. You may get fewer interviews but you’ll hold onto your integrity, which is priceless
