An overbooked schedule and a frantic team often give the illusion of a thriving, high-output business. However, constant activity frequently conceals a critical issue: people working at full capacity without delivering strategic value. While busyness offers quick reassurance, true productivity demands intentional focus, strategic clarity, and decisive leadership.

Without clear priorities and a defined decision flow, people can spend much of their working day navigating bad systems rather than doing work that creates value. As businesses grow, says growth strategist Dori Moreno, ways of working that were manageable with a small team can start creating bottlenecks.

Becoming productive therefore does not necessarily mean working faster. Businesses may need to look at what is creating the busyness in the first place.

A recent Labour Court decision provides employers with a useful warning: when designing voluntary severance or early-retirement programmes, age may be an administratively convenient dividing line, but convenience does not make discrimination lawful.

The dispute arose from Prasa’s efforts to reduce its wage bill and headcount. It introduced a voluntary severance package (VSP) for employees generally, while employees between the ages of 60 and 63 were instead offered voluntary early retirement (VER) where the VSP would have produced a higher amount.

The financial distinction was significant. Employees younger than 60 could receive a VSP incorporating a “sweetener” of 2.5 weeks’ salary for every completed year of service. Employees between 60 and 63 were limited to a lump sum calculated according to the months remaining until retirement.

3-5 years of experience in a manufacturing, production, supply chain, logistics or warehouse environment
Demonstrated exposure to process improvement, material flow optimisation, production planning, inventory management or operational excellence initiatives
Experience in manufacturing, supply chain, logistics, procurement, or operations environments
Strong commercial acumen with experience managing inventory, supplier relationships, cost control, and operational performance
A track record of process improvement, problem-solving, and driving accountability across teams

Boss’s Day, observed on 16 October this year, is about recognising the role that managers and leaders play in the workplace. But it is also a good day to remember that every worker is the “boss” of their career and can take ownership of their own growth, advancement and, to some extent, their working conditions.
