Brand new research: “Who Rides Out the Storm? The Immediate Post-College Transition and its Role in Socioeconomic Earnings Gaps.”

Even with the major earnings premium of a bachelor’s degree, graduates from lower-income families continue to earn much less than their wealthier peers, and it’s not just about college quality or major choice. This study reveals that the critical factor is the first job after graduation. 👉 When students lack financial or informational resources during their job search, they’re much more likely to “undermatch” to their first job, impacting their career trajectory even five years later.

Key finding: The type of first job explains nearly two-thirds of the previously unexplained earnings gap. Supporting young grads through the transition from college to career is crucial for reducing wage inequality.
