Why is this couch all cut up?

When porous or upholstered furniture is affected by biohazard contamination, it cannot simply be loaded up and taken to the landfill. The contaminated fabric, padding, and other porous materials must first be carefully removed and packaged for proper medical waste disposal.

Any remaining hard, nonporous surfaces are then thoroughly cleaned, disinfected, and inspected. Only after we verify that no contamination remains can the rest of the furniture be safely disposed of at a landfill.

Joe’s AZ BIO is licensed to transport medical waste, allowing our team to securely move the packaged biohazard contamination to our warehouse, where it is collected by an authorized medical waste company for proper disposal.

It’s not just about removing an item. It’s about making sure every part of the disposal process is handled safely and correctly.

Joe’s AZ Bio has been at the 2026 AHIA Annual Conference this week, and today Joe had a very special little helper join him for lunch: his grandson, Rhett! 💙

Rhett explored the conference with Grandpa Joe, and all of the amazing vendors made his day by giving him plenty of swag. By the time he was leaving, he said, “Wow, this is like work-or-treat!” 😂

AHIA is always one of our favorite conferences to attend as a vendor, but today further solidified just how incredible this organization and everyone who is part of it truly are. Thank you all for making Rhett feel so special!

Biohazard contamination isn’t always visible to the naked eye. Even when a surface looks clean, professional inspection and testing can help identify residual contamination and verify that the area has been properly remediated.

At Joe’s AZ BIO, we don’t rely on appearances. We use professional processes to help ensure the environment is truly safe again.

If you live in Arizona, chances are you've seen one of these massive walls of dust roll through the Valley. 🌪️ But have you ever thought about what might actually be in all that dust?

Haboobs can kick up huge amounts of dirt and fine particles from across the desert, roadways, agricultural areas and other outdoor environments. Most of the time, the aftermath means a VERY dusty patio and some extra cleaning around the house. But there are a few things worth checking after a major dust storm, especially your HVAC filter, air returns and areas where outdoor dust may have made its way inside.

So when does this become a job for a biohazard company? Normal dust is normal dust. But if storm conditions disturb or spread an existing source of contamination, that's a different story. Think rodent or bird waste, animal remains, sewage, human waste, discarded needles or other potentially biohazardous materials. If you're dealing with something beyond ordinary Arizona dust, that's when it's worth having the area professionally assessed.

Until then, change those filters, wipe down the house and stay safe out there during monsoon season, Arizona! 🌵⛈️

Not every biohazard cleanup is big or gory. Sometimes, it’s a small amount of contamination that can create a safety issue for the next person working in the space.

In this case, Joe’s AZ BIO was called in to remediate a vehicle before an auto body shop could safely begin repairs. Blood was visible on the deployed airbag, but during our inspection, we also identified additional residual blood spatter within the front interior of the vehicle.

Our team properly removed the contamination, cleaned and disinfected the affected areas, and verified that no additional contamination remained. Once we were finished, the vehicle was safe for the auto body technicians to begin their work. 🚗

It may not look like a major biohazard scene, but proper remediation protects everyone who comes next.

Sometimes in biohazard cleanup, the “after” isn’t always as pretty as you’d expect. And that’s okay! In this case, there was biohazard contamination on the flooring. The white foam you see in the "before" photo is an indicator spray we used to help identify the affected areas.

To properly remove the contamination, the top layer of flooring had to be removed, exposing an older layer of vinyl flooring underneath. Once exposed, we verified that the contamination had not penetrated to the flooring below, then thoroughly cleaned and sanitized the area. Is the “after” prettier? Maybe not. But the contamination is gone, the affected materials were properly removed, and the area is safe again. And in biohazard remediation, safe always comes before pretty.

One of the most common questions we hear is: "Why don't you just disinfect it?"

And truthfully, we get it. Needing biohazard cleanup is already overwhelming enough. Then you're told that part of the floor, drywall, or other materials have to be removed? That's definitely a punch to the gut. We promise it isn't about making the job bigger or recommending work that isn't necessary. The goal is to make sure all contamination has been safely captured and removed so the property can be fully restored.

The answer comes down to the type of material. Porous materials act like a sponge, absorbing contamination below the surface. Once contamination has soaked in, simply disinfecting the surface isn't enough. Some of the most common porous materials we remove during a biohazard cleanup include:
- carpet and carpet padding
- drywall
- particle board
- upholstered furniture
- insulation
- tile and vinyl plank flooring
- certain types of wood flooring
- baseboards

Every cleanup is different, so our recommendations are based on where the contamination has traveled, the materials affected, and industry standards for safe remediation.
