Hola SACNistas,

We encourage you to participate in the ShutDownSTEM event happening this Wednesday, June 10th (tomorrow). There has been a call to shut down STEM/Academia in response to the inhumane murders of Black people and the many examples of police brutality that we have all witnessed. We have an ethical obligation to address and combat anti-Black racism in STEM. In short, the call is to cease all STEM and academic work. Instead, the day should be a break for Black academics to process, recover, and heal, as well as a day for non-Black academics to reflect on racism within the community and commit to actionable items to eradicate racism from academia. We have done some of the work for you and compiled a list of resources you can share with your lab and/or discuss during lab meeting:

Here is a PDF with anti-racist resources from shutdownstem.com:

Videos that you can share within your circles that we feel will educate you on important matters including systemic racism, white privilege, and police brutality:

To end our note, we want to remind you racism exists in many forms and at different levels. The graphic below shows just how embedded racism is in every facet of our society. This is why it is imperative for all of us to come together and tear down these societal structures.

We are writing today with deep sadness and frustration. The murder of George Floyd is the latest event showcasing the structural racism that exists in this nation. We extend our support and gratitude to the Black community here at UCSF and across the nation. Please know that SACNAS at UCSF stands with you and the Black Lives Matter movement.

If anyone needs support or help (even if it is just to chat), please do not hesitate to reach out to any board members listed below or Liz Silva, Assoc. Dean of Graduate Programs ([email protected]). We also have listed some resources below that may be helpful.

As we prepare for the upcoming 2018 SACNAS National Conference, we urge our community to take a moment and think about our current political climate and how it is affecting students across the nation. As a Chapter, we strive to not only create an inclusive environment for URMS but to also give voice to the fears and concerns of those around us. We ask that the National Organization think about our collective future...where will we go, how will we protect our members and how do we provide support in the face of so many legislatives changes that are endangering our civil rights?

Please read/sign the petition and spread the word.

It was a pleasure to sit and talk with this year's SEP High School Interns! What a bright, motivated group of individuals, ready to learn and take the first steps towards a career in STEM. Always a joy to see the new generation of scientists.
