As more states legalize adult-use cannabis, a notable trend is emerging: Native American tribes are increasingly investing in cannabis businesses. Tribal-owned stores have become more common in recent years.

Data from MJBiz Daily shows that the number of tribally owned retailers has grown by roughly 25% since January 2023. As of May 2024, there are 57 tribally owned dispensaries, both medical and adult-use, across nine states.

With legal cannabis becoming more widespread, tribes are entering the industry to diversify their economies and boost revenue.

Since January 2023, we’ve witnessed a 25% increase in tribally owned retailers throughout the country, with budding markets like Minnesota potentially offering more opportunity for tribes looking to get a leg-up as lawmakers work to launch the statewide industry.

Louisiana Senators revived two cannabis-related bills this week after initially rejecting them. HB 165 and HB 391, which decriminalize cannabis paraphernalia and allow pardons for past ma*****na convictions, passed the Senate and will return to the House for further review.

HB 165, from Rep. Delisha Boyd (D), proposes a $100 fine for ma*****na paraphernalia offenses with no jail time. Currently, penalties can include up to $300 in fines and 15 days in jail for a first offense, increasing with subsequent offenses.

When Calvin Johnson Jr. retired from the Detroit Lions in 2016, he left the NFL at the peak of his career due to constant injuries and pain.

Now, eight years later, Johnson is returning to the locker room—not as a player, but with his cannabis company, Primitiv Performance.

Co-founded with former teammate Rob Sims, Primitiv recently secured marketing deals with Ford Field and the Detroit Tigers.
