In Malaga, Albert met and fell in love with José’s daughter, Maria. (Maria Delores De Jesús Hurtado, born in Malaga, Spain, in 1854-5). When Albert was in Spain, José was killed during a civil uprising ( we do not know what kind of social unrest that was, but approximate the date to be 1872-3). The story is that, while riding his horse, he was jumped on from a tree, and was stabbed to death. After this, and after Maria had witnessed the murder of other family members, Albert and Maria immediately fled; Albert took her to England to live. We don’t know why José (and other family) were killed, but we're assuming that because of the social status of José’s diplomatic employment, it would make sense that they were killed during a time of civil unrest
