PROTEST U.S. WAR ON IRAN. Tuesday, May 19, 4 PM in Providence
Stand with the RI Anti-War Committee to demand that the U.S. end its war on Iran. Let Cuba live. End the oil embargo. Call for a halt to U.S. aid to Israel and instead, provide sufficient humanitarian aid for the Palestinians. Stop all U.S. military incursions around the world. We meet every Tuesday and Friday at 4 PM at the intersection of Francis and Gaspee Streets across from the Providence Place Mall. Bring friends, signs and banners. Israeli Bases, U.S. Debt, and the Question.
Unbeknown to the U.S. and Iraq (really?), Israel constructed two bases in the southwest desert of Iraq over the last year. They were used as forward operating sites for Israel’s attack on Iran. One base was accidently discovered by an Iraqi Bedouin in his pickup on his way to pick up supplies. He was chased away by gunfire, and then by a helicopter gunship which eventually killed him and torched his truck. The killing was witnessed by fellow Bedouins. Upon investigation, Iraqi officials said that, yes, there was a second base as well. This is like the Old West on steroids. There are no rules, morals or standards of behavior. Might makes right, and if you don’t like it, well, that’s too bad.
In case you missed it, the U.S. federal debt just surpassed the U.S. total Gross Domestic Product (GDP) for a twelve-month period. This is only the second time since WWII that this milestone has been reached. The first was for a very short time in 1946. What is noteworthy this time is that the federal debt is projected to continue to increase. By 2056, the Congressional Budget Office expects the federal debt to reach 175% of the U.S. GDP. What this means is that the federal government has to issue Treasury Notes just to pay for the interest on the debt which alone now exceeds the defense budget. Note that Hegseth has asked for $1.5 trillion for defense in the coming budget year. Other causes for the increasing federal debt include paying for the 2008 fiscal crisis, the growing expense for caring for an aging population and the Trump tax cuts for the wealthy. Hold on to your hat.
Last week Trump already had answered the Question (why can’t Iran have a nuclear weapon). He said that it’s because the “Iranians are crazy.” This from a self-certified genius who has bragged about passing several cognitive tests. If any country is a danger to use a nuclear weapon, it’s Israel and the U.S., who’ve shown no reluctance to attack other countries. The only solution to nuclear weapon proliferation is world-wide nuclear disarmament. A good place to start is for the U.S. to get onboard and sign the U.N. Treaty to Ban Nuclear Weapons.
