The U.S. Maritime Administration (MARAD) has officially designated NMI as a Center of Excellence for Domestic Maritime Workforce Training and Education, a five-year federal designation recognizing our commitment to preparing the skilled mariners our industry depends on.

This recognition highlights the work happening across NMI, from our College of Maritime Science and hands-on professional training to simulation, sea-service experience, and NEMO° online education. Most importantly, it reflects the dedication of our students, graduates, faculty, staff, and the professional mariners who have trusted NMI with their education.

We are incredibly proud of this recognition and even more excited about the responsibility it brings to continue strengthening maritime education, expanding access to training, and preparing the next generation of professional mariners.

On the MTD course, casting off is scored too. You get 3 attempts to cast off the Single-Part Extended Pile.

Watch the fundamentals:

✅ Work from the hip
✅ Give yourself plenty of slack
✅ Send the wave of energy down the line

It’s not about memorizing one obstacle. It’s about understanding what makes the line react and building the line-handling skills you can apply in the field.

Every MTD obstacle comes from real-world line handling. You may never see the exact setup, but the fundamentals and techniques behind it can show up anywhere.

These are the basic fundamentals a deckhand should know. The same skills you use on deck every hitch.

FUNDAMENTALS: THE 2-PART FAIRLEAD

The 2-Part Fairlead tests your line handling, accuracy and your ability to properly secure a working line.

The standard:
✅ High-water hitch the eye
✅ Send the bight up to the kevel
✅ Fairlead the line
✅ Secure it on the lower side
✅ Working end goes between the timbers
✅ Lay clean figure 8s on top
✅ 4 wraps
✅ Take it off and finish clean

Here’s the catch — we don’t count how many attempts it takes you to catch the kevel.

Miss it? Throw again.

But every miss eats up your time. ⏱️

Maritime Throwdown was built to incentivize mariners to practice the fundamentals. You may not use this exact setup every day, and some techniques change based on where or how you work. Practicing them still builds a more well-rounded mariner who can bring more to the crew and the industry.

Accuracy comes from repetition.
Speed comes from being smooth.

Practice the fundamentals. Then come put them to the test.

FUNDAMENTALS: SUITCASING THE WORKING LINE

One of the final obstacles on the Maritime Throwdown course is suitcasing the working line.

The standard:
✅ Eye or tag end DOWN
✅ Coil CLOCKWISE
✅ Keep your coils clean and controlled
✅ Wrap the eye around the coils to secure the line
✅ Carry it — don’t drag it across the deck and create a trip hazard

Maritime Throwdown was built to incentivize mariners to practice the fundamentals.

You may not use every one of these skills every day. Some techniques may be more common in one geographic area or operation than another. But keeping those skills sharp makes you a more well-rounded mariner and a more valuable asset to your crew and our industry.

That’s what MTD is about: Recruit. Train. Retain.

Practice it. Get comfortable with it. Then come put your skills to the test.
