In honor of our 25th Anniversary, we're highlighting co-workers who've been at Affinis since 2001. Today, we're excited to feature Jason Davis, PE, Principal and President.

We asked him which changes stand out to him when comparing Affinis now to how it looked 25 years ago. He said, "We have diversified our clients across different markets. In 2009, we made the decision to pursue federal work. This opened us up to clients outside of municipalities and state DOT's. This decision allowed us to weather the economic downturn that impacted our city and state clients, as we could supplement our workload with projects that were available on the Federal market. Over the years, we have grown this market through teaming and joint venture partnerships. Additionally, in 2001, we were primarily a transportation design company. Since that time, we have expanded our Stormwater, Traffic, Structures, Geotech, and Federal team capabilities. Each of these teams is a standalone team that not only supports the other Affinis teams, but also performs its own projects. However, our values have not changed since 2001. This has been essential in maintaining our culture and has guided us in our decisions."

Several years ago, the City of Olathe, Kansas was having downstream flooding along Coffee Creek. To solve it, they decided to create a regional detention area near Lindenwood Dr. and Brougham Dr. with funding assistance from the Johnson County Stormwater Management Program. In addition to managing the stormwater, they wanted this project to support future development in the area.

To meet their goals, two dams were constructed at the future alignments of Lindenwood Dr. and Brougham Dr.. The Lindenwood Dr. dam is comprised of two box culverts, a 5’ x 4’ reinforced concrete box (RCB) and a 9’ x 5’ RCB. Our team provided stabilization basins at both box culverts and designed the embankment to provide for the future roadway on top of the dam. The Brougham Dr. dam has one box culvert that is 12’ x 11’ in size and was designed so the dam embankment provides for the future roadway as well.

Today, a section of Lindenwood Dr. has been constructed and new residential housing is being added downstream. This infrastructure has safely paved the way for growth in Olathe.

Last weekend, we built more with Habitat for Humanity of Kansas City. Working alongside volunteers from across the metro, we raised our hammers and our hearts, as we moved our community forward.

"We had a great Saturday out at our site, really great weather, and had a great team to work with. We worked on a home in KCK and helped with the exterior. We put up the fascia and soffit. The home will have four bedrooms and two bathrooms. It was a lot of fun. We got to learn how to use new tools and how to build a house. We all really enjoyed it!," said Kendall Rees, PE, Engineer I.

When asked why we selected Habitat, Kendall said, "Our community service committee picks volunteer projects for our coworkers to attend together. We always plan a few off-site opportunities every year, in addition to clothing, toy, and food drives that we organize at the office. This year, we decided to volunteer with Habitat because our coworkers were interested in this activity. They've seen the impact the organization has on our community and wanted to be a part of something that was so hands-on."

For the Terrapin Creek project with the Kansas Department of Transportation (KDOT), our team was tasked with replacing the existing simple steel beam (SBMS) bridge. To meet KDOT's goals, we designed a double-cell Reinforced Concrete Rigid Frame Box (RFB) as the replacement. The new structure will extend to the clear zone, eliminating the need for a guardrail. With our design, we maintained the existing horizontal alignment and vertical profiles of the roadway.

To keep traffic moving during construction, we had to make a few strategic updates to the site. Our team designed a shoofly. New right-of-way was also required, and a field entrance will be moved. Additionally, we developed temporary traffic control to accommodate the phased approach.

Last week, Mike McKenna joined other traffic experts at the 2026 MOVITE Annual Conference. The theme this year was “Honoring the Past, Navigating the Future," which provided the perfect opportunity to learn, connect, and think about what’s next for the transportation industry.

Thank you to ITE Nebraska Section for a great conference. We’re excited to bring new ideas and insights back to our work and the communities we serve.
