Today was a great day of reflecting on the final MSDC semi finalist pitch competition seminar. Our founder learned about capital and lending and at what stages of business that various capital opportunities become available. She appreciated the statements from Allstate on the importance of small businesses to the ecosystem as well as LISC’s informative financial presentation. A special thank you to MSDC for making opportunities like these possible to small business owners.

In addition to reflecting on this opportunity, She met with her business mentor and sat in an information session for a second pitch competition with angel investors.

“One thing I value most about my education and corporate experiences was learning the importance of preparing for and seizing an opportunity. If you plan to attend a networking event, workshop or event job interview and you have access to the speaker list or attendee list, do your research and prepare a few questions. Don’t assume that you will have the opportunity later or another time or by email or in a follow up call.

During a Career Mobility Workshop, I love the fact that there were attendees who used that opportunity to ask myself and my friend, an HRBP, questions. After an event , life and work can become chaotic with other obligations and commitments and while I do not like to disappoint anyone after any event, sometimes I do have to deliver the tough message that while I allotted time for that speaking and networking engagement, I cannot always individually connect with several attendees in multiple follow up meetings.

I loved how one attendee who was enrolled in the same school that I graduated from asked for class recommendations during the networking portion of the event. I am extremely grateful and honored to have had the opportunity to speak to the brilliant minds of Chicago SHRM’s (Society of Human Resources Management ) Emerging Leaders and Transitioning Professionals group.

I want to thank the Chicago SHRM chapter, Emerging Leaders Committee and Job Transition Committee for inviting me to present Catrice HR’s Position for Promotion or Pivot Career Mobility Workshop where I shared with the audience how to perform a skill gap analysis between where they are and where they want to go. The workshop went beyond theory and was supported by coaching case studies and rooted in real life experiences.

I would like to thank Invenergy at 1 S Wacker for sponsoring the space; and I would like to thank all of the emerging, advancing, and pivoting professionals for investing time into themselves and their careers.

Special thanks to Jacob, events manager, Stephanie, committee lead, Tami, marketing member, and Alex committee member of Chicago SHRM Emerging Leaders for curating the event and supporting the logistics from leading up to the event to day of support.

Our Founder & Principal Consultant, Cassandra C. Smith MHRIR SPHR kicked off the week at a Business Summit sponsored by WellsFargo and to her surprise, one of her colleagues Moses of Mohall Commercial & Urban Development was one of the fellows pitching their business. All of the fellows had outstanding pitches including the 3 winners, one of which is the founder of Dockside and belongs to the same Divine 9 sorority as our founder who is a member of Alpha Kappa Alpha Sorority Inc.

This event brought together founders, business enthusiasts, MBA graduates and students, community leaders, political leaders such as Chicago’s Mayor Brandon Johnson, small business owners at varying stages and across backgrounds and industries.

Our founder loved to see the pitches from business owners in HR and workforce development adjacent including the third place winner.
