Gillman Strategic Group We help Law Firm Rainmakers who are feeling frustrated and unappreciated at their current firm, find

🔆WHAT WE DO

We are law firm matchmakers who help partners with established business find their perfect fit at another firm. We do all the legwork you would do yourself if you only had the time and knew where to start.

🔆 WHO WE WORK WITH

We place law firm partners (and solo practitioners) who have an established client base, usually in the range of $750,000 and above (although there are some mor

e specialized opportunities for those with less portable business).

🔆 WHY YOU NEED US

Most lawyers don’t know what exists beyond their own personal network. It can be easy to think “it’s like this everywhere.”

Nothing makes us happier than placing a partner at a new firm and getting a phone call a few months later, sharing with me how much better their life is now that they’ve made the move. From all of the time it takes to do research and legwork, to helping you negotiate the very best deal for yourself and your family, to ensuring that your values are shared by your new firm and that you see a future for yourself that excites and motivates you, we are your advocate through this entire process.

🔆 WHY IT WORKS

We focus solely on partner level candidates, and are candidate-facing, so our loyalty is always with you and not the law firms. Because of this, you get the benefit of 12 years of law practice, 13 years of recruiting experience, and a personal interest in matchmaking to help you every step of the way, until you find your perfect fit to achieve your professional and personal goals.

🔆 HOW IT WORKS

âś… FIRST we have a brief call to determine if we can help you and discuss how it would look to work together

âś… ONCE WE DECIDE TO WORK TOGETHER, discuss what needs to be improved about your current law firm and what qualities are important to you in the new firm.

âś… Then we HELP DRAFT AND REVISE YOUR BUSINESS PLAN

âś… WE DO RESEARCH and put together a LIST OF FIRMS we recommend, which we discuss

âś… AFTER YOU DECIDE WHICH FIRMS YOU'RE INTERESTED IN, WE SUBMIT you to our contacts at those firms

âś… WE PREPARE YOU for all meetings with the firms, DEBRIEF you after the meetings, get FEEDBACK from the firms, and PREPARE you for all subsequent meetings

âś… WE HELP you fill out the Lateral Partner Questionnaire (LPQ)

âś… WE NEGOTIATE offers and HELP YOU MAKE A DECISION about which one to accept

We’ve all got habits - bad ones we need to break (picking our nails) or great ones that keep us healthy and happy (writing a great to-do list for the next day or stretching before bed).

What habit have you put into place that has made your life - personal or professional - better?

We’ve been working with firms and candidates with different feelings about returning to the office.

Some candidates want a firm that gives them the autonomy to decide where they can work the most effectively. Others want to get back to work, full-time, now.

How do you feel about it?

Most times, potential candidates reach out to us because they are not happy or satisfied with their current job.

What lawyer would talk to a legal recruiter if they were completely happy?

On this first phone call, we learn the source of unhappiness or dissatisfaction. On subsequent calls, we learn that management has heard the complaints and has promised to make changes. Our potential candidate then informs us that all is good, and they are no longer interested in finding a new law firm.

Guess what? Most often, we get follow-up calls a year or more later.

The promises have not been kept and the partner remains unhappy.

You deserve better. Read more in our blog: http://ow.ly/AWux50FviDD

Are you good at keeping promises?

Law firm partners reach out to me because they are not happy or satisfied with their current job after the firm does not keep its promises.

Law firms are stereotypically known to be “behind the times” - many still have a typewriter, regularly use a fax machine, and are not revered for cutting edge technology.

One thing that we have been seeing from many firms is an increased push for diversity, equity, and inclusion initiatives.

How is your industry handling DE&I?

If you could ask for one thing in your professional life, and you wouldn’t be told no, what would you ask for?

08/17/2021

Would you give up some compensation to have more free time?

Many of the lawyers we speak to say that the pandemic has blurred the lines between free time and work time.

We all thought we’d have more free time with no commutes or office chitchat, but we are in fact working longer hours with no dedicated start or stop to the day.

Jen recently wrote a blog about the difference between a legal recruiter and a law firm matchmaker.

The main difference is that the recruiters get notice of an opening at a law firm and they begin reaching out to attorneys to try and fill the position.

They set up the interview, and once the placement is made, the firm pays the recruiter.

End of story.

A law firm matchmaker works with a lawyer to find out why they are not happy with their law firm, does research, and performs due diligence, to present the lawyer with law firms that would fit their needs and wants.

The matchmaker does all the legwork - everything from helping with the LPQ to preparing a business plan to ask the firm tough questions and negotiating an offer.

A matchmaker does it all except going on the interview!

Once the placement is made, the firm pays the matchmaker.

But the story doesn’t end there.

The matchmaker stays in touch to make sure both parties are holding up their end of the bargain and helps if there is a roadblock or an impasse.

Which scenario sounds better to you?

Google “kick the dog syndrome” and see the results. This is a real psychological thing where one displaces their frustration and anger onto other innocent victims.

While we cannot find statistics that show people actually kick their dogs (thank goodness), most of us know this expression.

Does anything about your job give you kick the dog syndrome?

Are you stressed and burned out?

Are you unhappy at your current law firm?

Is the grind impacting relationships with your clients, colleagues, family, and friends?

Are you lashing out against the people who mean the most to you?

If so, it is time to take stock of your situation.

Check out our blog for some tips on getting to the root cause and solving the problem - http://ow.ly/QUyw50FvisD

What do you do when you feel burnout coming on?

Are you unhappy at your current law firm? Is the grind impacting relationships with your clients, family and friends? Time for a change?

When was the last time you had to work until 4 a.m., or miss another big event in your kiddo’s life, or turned away a big client because you couldn’t handle their needs?

When lawyers reach out to me it’s never the first time that they’re dissatisfied… there’s always that last straw moment - and that’s when they get in touch.

Have you ever experienced a “last straw moment” when you knew you needed to make a change?

As a young girl, Jen fondly remembers her great-grandmother saying that there is a cover for every pot.

As a child, the saying did not have much meaning to Jen.

However, as she grew up, Jen realized that was her way of saying there is a significant other for each of us.

Jen also now understands that her dear Grandma Esther may not have been the originator of this phrase. She equates this to learning that the Tooth Fairy is not real.

Anyway, there is a book with a similar title. It is Every Pot Has a Cover: A Proven System for Finding, Keeping and Enhancing the Ideal Relationship by Michael J. Salamon.

At this point, you are probably asking yourself, what the heck does this have to do with legal recruiting? Find out in Jen's blog - http://ow.ly/BczW50FvioL

What age were you when you found out the Tooth Fairy wasn't real?

The is a cover for every pot - just like there is a law firm for every partner. Gillman matches successful partners with the perfect law firm.
