Being to yourself is more important than you might imagine.

We are told that in order to be motivated and achieve our potential, we need to be tough on ourselves. Research shows that this attitude leads to self-criticism, social comparison, feelings of isolation, and severe outcomes over a lifespan. On the other hand, the practice of is strongly associated with psychological well-being and increased feelings of optimism and connectedness as well as decreased and . Research shows that far from encouraging self-indulgence, self-compassion helps us make changes because we care about ourselves and want to reach our full potential.

It's also the path to true . It is hard to be genuinely kind to others when we’re unkind to ourselves in thoughts and actions. With self-compassion, we are more aware of our shared, common humanity because we honor and accept the vulnerability of our own humanness.
