The New York Asian Women's Center (NYAWC) provides support to women and children of all ethnicities who are victims of domestic violence and/or human trafficking. Victims suffer emotionally, economically, physically and socially. The NYAWC offers free and confidential support in the areas of shelter, counseling, legal assistance, children's programs as well as assistance with housing, education an
d employment. Over 600 women and 100 children benefit from these services each year, and there are currently 2 emergency residences in the city that provide temporary housing for victims in need. In an effort to support the children and families living in these shelters, I am working with the NYAWC on a project that I am calling Start Fresh. My goal is to provide backpacks and school supplies to the children as they start the new school year and to have additional supplies available for children that enter the program in the future. I have purchased 24 backpacks and an assortment of school supplies so far and will be contacting retailers and manufacturers for support. Please join me in this project with your tax-deductible donations as well as any ideas that can further this initiative and create a brighter future for these families. With your contribution, we could make this an annual event and expand to provide clothing, books and other items as well.
