A little Friday PSA:

My girl brought me a good speaking point today. The topic was all about gaps in your resume and why the emphasis on them?

So first of all, gaps are much more accepted now than they once were. People are taking time off, sabbatical, laid off due to COVID, etc. As I recruiter I tend to focus less on these things and more on the content of the interview and how a person presents.

Certainly if we see a lot of short stints we may probe further to understand the why. But it doesn’t mean it is a dealbreaker. I think transparency is huge here on the candidate part, and EMPATHY is huge in the recruiter’s part. The two go hand in hand.

Saying no. A haiku.

Uncomfortable.
Pushing past the discomfort.
There lies the freedom.

Written by yours truly, after having to say no to a corporate client today when they asked me for more bandwidth. I said no. A proud moment for me indeed. ❤️

On this day a few years ago, I reflect back on my power resume review sessions at Girlboss rally. Weary from my chemo and radiation treatments I remember thinking “how am I going to do all of this?”

And then I was in my element. I met some great future clients, connected with and felt energized again.

I go back to this moment often, because I was on a ledge here. Exhausted and scared. I got through it.

Keep going. 💪🏼

👋🏼 from the desk of your favorite recruiter....

As we near the end of the craziest and most cl*******ck of a year, it is time to reflect.

What are you doing to help further your progress in your job search?

No matter if you are laid off or furloughed, or just sick of your current role, ask yourself how are you maximizing your time each day. Assuming you have binge watched The Queens Gambit already, are you setting realistic goals for yourself each week?

How many applications will you submit? How many people in your network will you reach out to? How many hours of research on companies are you doing?

I’m doing a lot of recruiting right now and the candidate pool is motivated and moving quickly. Jobs are getting filled faster than I have seen. It is important you keep your eyes on the prize. We have a lot going on, and productivity will suffer at times. That’s ok. Adjust your goals accordingly and stay consistent. You will make something happen that way.

If you’re laid off or furloughed and aren’t connected to me on LinkedIn, send me a request and mention you saw my post. 🙌🏼

Thanks, for nominating me for the challenge.

Kickin’ it old school here. August 2017. My first business photo shoot for my website with . This photo represents the joy, excitement, anxiety, fear and courage I had to walk away from my career in fashion to start my own business. I was pretty terrified. And only now do I really realize that this is how it was supposed to go. In my ‘Choose Your Own Adventure’ book, I chose right. ✌🏼

NOW HEAR THIS 🎤

When you’re in the job search, make sure that the organization is walking the walk. You know what I mean. What’s important to them? How are they giving back to the community? What are their core values?

Burbs always gave me these opportunities. I didn’t realize how important it was to me until I was in it. Many clients I work with have come to me with similar sentiments, not realizing how little their current orgs are doing.

Can your org be doing more? Speak up and tell them. The time is now. ✨

PS- This day was amazing. I remember it well.

When Mary reached out again after working together a few years ago, she was nervous about the volatile environment in retail. Here’s what she had to say after working together for a 2nd time:

“I connected with Tiffany years ago when I needed some career coaching. More recently, when I started thinking about looking for a new job, the first person I thought of was Tiffany.

I needed a complete re-do of my resume, LinkedIn profile and cover letter. Tiffany broke down how to draft my resume to speak to the job description. The way she explained things was completely eye opening. She gave me easy tips and suggestions.

I hadn’t written a cover letter in years, and didn’t know where to start. She went through paragraph by paragraph with me, and the end result was attention grabbing! As I navigate though my job search, I feel more confident and secure in how I’m presenting myself, thanks to Tiffany.”

Update: Mary has had several interviews since then. The job is yours if you’re ready to put in the work. 🙌🏼

330 Columbus Street came up on my Facebook mems today. In all its glory. The asbestos pumping heater in the attic. The haunted basement. The wild dogs running through the living room. All. The. Mice. The windows bolted shut with a fire escape right outside. Vinyl doors.

But. It was close to the bars. 👀

We deserved more. But we settled for this. So like, why would you settle for the job you don’t want just because it offers free RX bars and has a beer fridge.

Key takeaway: Your next job should not be 330 Columbus Street. Do better. 😂

Recruiters get it.

What do I mean by that?

So recently I have had an uptick of clients ask me about gaps in their resumes due to layoffs from COVID. Many have asked about how to communicate furloughs.

“Will this hurt me?”

“Will the gals make me less marketable?”

No. Recruiters get it. We are empathetic. The idea is to be transparent and do not be afraid to be a little vulnerable. These are uncertain times.

You are marketable. You are capable. This isn’t your fault. COVID happened to US.

Now go get ‘em. 🐅

Many of my clients right now have come to our sessions feeling drained. As COVID cases start to spike again in certain areas, layoffs keep coming, there is no end in sight.

It is important to take a break from the job search. If you’re too focused on it, like anything it will be less effective and you will burn yourself out. Job searching requires a lot of time and energy. To top it off, we are under so much stress as a country right now.

Keep going, but also take a break.

We all need a BREAK. 😭🙌🏼
