★ STUDENT SPOTLIGHT: Joan Carregal ★

Joan Carregal, born and raised in New York, is a graduate of Hartwick College and a first year, full-time student in the Higher Education and Student Affairs M.A. program. At Hartwick, she majored in Biology and became interested and involved in various campus departments such as: the Admissions Department, where she welcomed new and prospective students as a Blue Key Tour Guide; the Office of Residence Life, where she was a Community Development Advisor in her senior year; and the Career Development Office, where Joan served as a Career Services Intern. Joan’s interactions with countless departments on campus sparked her passion for higher education.

Currently, Joan works at two internship sites. Her primary role is at Stevens Institute of Technology, located in Hoboken, New Jersey, where she works in the Office of Residence Life as an Assistant Area Coordinator for off-campus housing. Joan also works at NYU Stern School of Business in the Undergraduate College Office of Student Engagement. Both internships grant her unique insights into two different student populations. Joan loves the dynamic nature of her work, the fact that every day in the office is different, and that her work and input are valued by her students.

Joan looks forward to presenting with her mentor this summer at the NASPA Regional Conference. In the future, Joan plans on earning her PhD in Higher Education.

★ STUDENT SPOTLIGHT: Michele Lee ★

Michele Lee, a Brooklyn native, is a graduate of Smith College and a second year, full-time students in the Higher Education and Student Affairs M.A. program. At Smith, she majored in Sociology and became involved with various student organizations such as Gold Key-Tour Guides, Hall Council, and the Asian Students Association. Her academics and leadership in co-curricular activities led to her passion in social justice.

In high school, Michele was fortunate enough to participate in a college-bound program that helped enhance her academic skills and college readiness. Wanting to increase college access and equity for students from underserved communities, Michele was a Site Director for "Let's Get Ready," a non-profit college-bound program, during her junior year of college. Working with students in Let’s Get Ready and Residential Life at Smith led her to her current studies in Student Affairs.

Currently, she holds a Resident Director position at Pratt Institute, and is volunteering at Marymount Manhattan College's Higher Education Opportunity Program. She is also involved with the FOCUS Mentorship program and the Administrators Cultural Training Institute at NYU. After graduation, Michele aspires to continue working in Student Affairs and supporting students from disadvantaged backgrounds in whichever ways she can.

★ STUDENT SPOTLIGHT: Byron Tsabetsaye ★

Byron Tsabetsaye is a first-year, full-time student in the HESA Program. Byron grew up in the southwest on the Navajo reservation and attended Fort Lewis College in Colorado. Much of Byron's initial interests in higher education came from his involvement in college as an admissions ambassador, orientation leader, and student body president. Currently, Byron is a graduate assistant in the Office of New Students in the College of Arts and Science at NYU where he advises CAS' student government and works with the College Cohort Program. Byron also works part-time at the Graduate School of Arts and Science in Graduate Enrollment Services at NYU.

During Byron's senior year in college, he testified at the U.S. congressional level in support of U.S. Senate Bill 3504 entitled the “Native American Indian Education Act of 2012." This created a foundation for Byron’s aspirations to work within Native American education in tribal, state, or national government. Byron is currently researching PhD programs at institutions in Massachusetts, California, and New York City. “I am still exploring my possibilities and there are many places I could see myself thriving," says Byron "but the further I advance in my studies of higher education at NYU, the more I want to focus on administration and policy."
