RELOCATION

As a BigLaw attorney, the sky’s the limit and the world is truly at your feet. With a highly sought out skill set, resume to boot and an impressive deal sheet, you may find yourself with job offers in new cities. Relocation and moving are tremendous life changes that could yield long-term career growth opportunities. Sounds tempting? The grass always seems greener, right? Maybe, but there’s a great deal of planning and thought to put into this decision. At Langer Search, we take the time to weigh and measure opportunities for our candidates while hashing out the pros and cons associated with relocation.

Here are some of the most common things that come up in our conversations:

Bar Exam: Are you willing to take a new Bar Exam? Does your admission reciprocate?
Connections/Support: Do you have family or connections to the new city?
Reason: Why are you looking to leave?
Family: Are you married? Can your spouse easily relocate? Are your kids school-age?
Timing: When do you receive your bonus? Figuring out a strategic start date is key and do you want to plan it around a vacation prior to starting?
Scope of Practice: If you’re moving from New York, practice areas tend to be much broader.

A successful and seamless relocation requires proper planning, timing and precision. Langer Search can reduce your stress and mitigate any unknowns by engaging in thoughtful conversations before you take your leap. We’re here to help facilitate a meaningful dialogue, even if it’s in the earliest stages of your planning.

You got through several rounds of interviews, fielded hypotheticals, talked about your deal sheet and met with a handful of partners. You got an offer. Amazing, right?

But there’s a problem. Your gut says no. It’s not the right fit, it’s not what you’re looking for, something isn’t sitting right. Saying “no” is not so easy and it’s a process that you should approach with care. It could impact your career in the future and is a reflection on you.

Relationships matter. The firm has invested a lot of time in you and you’ve invested a lot of time in them. You’ve met important contacts with whom you may very well cross paths with in the future. Interviewing is a form of networking and can be helpful for you even if you decline the offer in the end if you handle it strategically. Declining gracefully and professionally leaves the door open for you to reconnect in the future.

Langer Search will work with you to navigate your offers strategically. We will help you leave these doors open. Let us know how we can help support you.

Reflecting on Your Year

It's December. The end of 2020 is approaching. Bonuses and promotions are right around the corner. Your firm has been evaluating you, but have you evaluated them? Here are some questions we've put together to help you reflect on your progress and goals this year:

1. Are you feeling fulfilled in your role and being challenged? Does the work still excite you?

2. How is your work/life balance?

3. How many partners will your firm announce this year?

4. How has your firm shifted to accommodate for the covid year? Have you felt supported by them and your manager?

5. Is your firm making savvy decisions to properly align itself for long-term growth and success?

Langer Search welcomes the opportunity to help you reflect on your year and map out a plan for 2021. We can provide you with a consultation to thoughtfully reflect on your year and help position you for long-term success.

DM on LinkedIn, email [email protected], or call (917) 501-9376. We look forward to working together.

Another important aspect of a successful recruiter/candidate relationship is connection. Is the recruiter conveying trust and support? Will this recruiter prioritize your best interests and work with you to fulfill your long-term goals in your career? As a BigLaw recruiter, I understand that you’ve worked extremely hard to get to where you are and don’t take your efforts lightly. Changing firms is not easy and finding a recruiter who understands and conveys this may not be either. At Langer Search, we ensure that this process is as seamless as possible. We invest the time and energy so that you don’t have to. Every search we conduct is personal and we’re passionate about changing attorney’s lives to position them for the greatest level of success in their careers. We love what we do and if you work with us you can easily see that.

Wishing you and your families a Happy Thanksgiving. We are truly grateful to have the opportunity to meet and work with such a talented group of individuals.

As an executive recruiter for BigLaw attorneys in the Emerging Companies and Venture Capital space, I have the opportunity to work with a uniquely talented group of individuals. In conversations with my candidates, I aim to gain a deep understanding of their long-term goals for their legal careers. My objective is to not only seek out the most competitive opportunities for my candidates, but to also help them conceptualize their five and ten year plans. This connection and knowledge enables me to find the right fit for their next job. If a candidate’s goal is to make partner at a law firm, an important question to ask is, “will my current law firm afford me the best opportunity to achieve my long-term goal or should I position myself at a new firm?”

I encourage candidates to examine the history and statistics related to making partner at their current firms. Investigating the number of associates who made partner at a firm over the last few years can provide a clear indication of the likelihood they will make partner there. Positioning yourself for long-term success as a law firm partner requires careful planning, research and possibly a lateral move. Taking time to carefully discuss your ideal BigLaw career path will help position you to fully realize your long-term plans.
