B.E.R.T. – Beginning. Ending. Real Truth.
Episode 4: 15th Avenue
Setting: Miami, Florida – 1980s
Location: NW 15th Avenue, Liberty City
Not every day was filled with fear.
Some days, Miami felt like paradise.
The sun was always shining. Kids raced bicycles down 15th Avenue, chased ice cream trucks, and turned fire hydrants into water parks. Music poured from every porch. DJ Uncle AL was on the radio, mixing records that shook the whole neighborhood. 2 Live Crew and Poison Clan blasted from cars and boom boxes, and DJs were the heartbeat of the community, turning 15th Avenue into a nonstop block party. Neighbors grilled outside, laughed together, and looked after each other’s children.
For a few hours, everyone forgot how hard life really was.
Bert and Albert joined the neighborhood kids in games of football and tag until the streetlights came on.
Then came Patricia, Bert’s oldest sister.
She had a smile that could light up the room and a heart big enough for the whole family. Even as a teenager, she carried herself like another parent. She braided hair, checked homework, settled arguments, and somehow found a way to make her younger brothers laugh when life felt heavy.
“Y’all better be home before Mama gets here!” she yelled from the front porch.
“We’re coming!” Bert shouted, squeezing in one last play.
Inside the apartment, dinner wasn’t fancy—but it was family. Rice, peas, chicken, laughter, and stories from back home in the Bahamas filled the room.
For a little while, the struggle disappeared.
Outside, 15th Avenue was alive.
Inside, hope was still alive too.
Bert didn’t know it then, but these simple moments would become the memories he would hold onto the longest.
Because sometimes the best days happen right before life changes forever.
