Since summer 2011, an incredibly dedicated team of volunteer teachers and students has been converting 2 acres of the John Muir HS campus into an urban farm. Any student of Muir can participate in hands-on learning at the Ranch by enrolling in one of three classes or applying for the after school internship program. The vision is for the Ranch to be integrated into every discipline taught at Muir
High School, including science, math, English, art, and environmental studies. The mission of Muir Ranch CSA is to teach the students important business and life skills, provide them with meaningful employment, and improve access to fresh, affordable, locally-grown produce. Muir Ranch CSA is a cooperative, or “blended”, CSA, which means we gather produce from our school farm, as well as other regional farms. This type of CSA increases variety for members, and assures that there will be plenty of produce every week throughout the season. By joining, our members support more than one local farm, as well as a farm-based high school educational program that connects the realms of project-based learning, meaningful employment, youth development, local food production, community, and health. Proceeds from the CSA are used to fund paid internships at Muir Ranch year round. Email [email protected] for more info or to request a a CSA membership form. Any other questions can be forwarded to [email protected]
Muir Ranch is an opportunity for the students to serve their community as young entrepreneurs and agents of change.
