The new Fort Lauderdale City Commission has struck again by voting NO to the oversized 21-story Alexan-Tarpon River building at the August 21st Commission Meeting. Thank you, Mayor Dean Trantalis, Vice Mayor Ben Sorensen - Fort Lauderdale , and Commissioner Steve Glassman for your dedication, determination and hard-work in executing your “Smart Growth” promise to the residents in Fort Lauderdale. Leaders stand out by the nature of their commitment and the integrity of their character.

Special shout-out to the residents at WaterGarden, Las Olas Grand, Rio Vista, Las Olas by the River, and Nu River Landing for your support in getting our voices heard.

In one of the first development controversies for the newly elected City Commission the Alexan-Tarpon River residential tower, proposed at 501 SE Sixth Ave., was rejected 3-2. It would have been 21 stories tall, with 181 residential units.

We Want a Better City – Stop Alexan-Tarpon River!

Fort Lauderdale’s elected officials have vowed to end the era of developers building whatever they please to in the city’s downtown. Let’s hold them to that promise! The proposed 22-story Alexan-Tarpon River building planned for a property that the city’s own Downtown Master Plan says should be a maximum of 8 stories is the opposite of “Smart Growth.” Join Concerned Citizens for Preservation of Our Neighborhood tonight, May 15, at 6 p.m. ET in City Hall, where City Commissioners will hold a special public hearing and vote on Alexan-Tarpon River Project. We need to pack the room and put a stop on this project.

The Sea of Red at the Alexan-Tarpon River Project Meeting with Vice Mayor Ben Sorensen - Fort Lauderdale

Concerned Citizens for Preservation of Our Neighborhood along with many downtown residents joined Vice Mayor Ben Sorensen for a presentation by the ATRP developer, Trammel Crow at City Hall today. We need to reiterate that - don’t fall for the scare tactics the Alexan-Tarpon developers are using. The developer said that "if city commissioners don’t approve their building, someone else could come along and construct an even taller and uglier building on the property".

False.

Fort Lauderdale residents, the Mayor, and the Commissioners are too smart to fall for that!

Let’s take a stand now and show the City Commissioners that we will not allow a developer to ignore the city's Downtown Master Plan. Here in Fort Lauderdale, we need to let our city commissioners know that Alexan-Tarpon River is WAY out of scale with the 8-story height limit for the property set by the Downtown Master Plan and would have overwhelmingly negative impacts on traffic and infrastructure – particularly the downtown sewer system.

Come out to the City Commission Hearing and vote NO on Alexan-Tarpon River at on Tuesday, May 15, at 6 p.m. ET in Fort Lauderdale City Hall 100 N Andrews Avenue, Fort Lauderdale, Fl, 33301

Please contact us at [email protected] to learn more about our plans for the big hearing for tomorrow.

Alexan-Tarpon River Developer Has History of Ignoring Neighborhood Character and Integrity

The 22-story Alexan-Tarpon River is not the first project the developer Trammel Crow has proposed that is out of scale with the property and neighborhood it would be built in. In Los Angeles, Trammel Crow has been sued twice by a nonprofit group over the proposed 27-story Alexan apartment building. The group argued that Alexan would be “out of character” and “damage the integrity” of the Downtown Los Angeles neighborhood the property is located.

Here in Fort Lauderdale, we need to let our City Commissioners know that Alexan-Tarpon River is WAY out of scale with the 8-story height limit for the property set by the Downtown Master Plan and would have overwhelmingly negative impacts on traffic, emergency services, and infrastructure – particularly the downtown sewer system.

Join us for Monday’s District 4 Discussion with Vice Mayor Ben Sorensen on May 14 at 4 p.m. ET in the 8th Floor cafeteria of City Hall and for Tuesday’s May 15 City Commission hearing and vote on Alexan-Tarpon River at 6 p.m. ET in City Hall.

We Stopped the Wave, Now Let’s Stop the Oversized Alexan-Tarpon River Project

The new Fort Lauderdale City Commission just listened to the residents by finally killing the Wave streetcar project. Now we have to put commissioners to the test again and show them that they need to listen to us and vote NO to the 22-story Alexan-Tarpon River building. It is drastically oversized, as the city’s Downtown Master Plan set an 8-story height limit for the Alexan property, and would create major sewer system, traffic and access problems. We have two opportunities to help our elected officials see that Alexan-Tarpon River cannot happen: during Vice Mayor Ben Sorensen’s District 4 Discussion this Monday (5/14) at 4 p.m. ET in the 8th Floor cafeteria of City Hall, and most importantly during this Tuesday’s (5/15) City Commission special hearing and vote on the project.

Although the Wave is history, it was an expensive failure.

Come to City Hall Monday, May 14 at 4 p.m. ET for Important Meeting with Vice Mayor!

This Monday, May 14, Fort Lauderdale Vice Mayor Dr. Ben Sorensen is having his District 4 Discussion and allowing the Alexan-Tarpon River development team to present their plans for discussion, feedback and questions. If you are like us and don’t want to see a 22-story building on a property that the city’s Downtown Master Plan limits to a maximum of 8 stories, please join Concerned Citizens for Preservation of Our Neighborhood on Monday! The discussion will take place at 4 p.m. ET in the 8th Floor cafeteria of City Hall (100 N. Andrews Ave.). The Commission will appreciate having our honest feedback and it is our right as residents to let the Vice Mayor and Alexan-Tarpon developers see and hear how much the downtown community does not want this project to move forward.

Help Stop Alexan-Tarpon River this Monday, May 14 at City Hall with Vice Mayor Ben Sorensen!

The 22-story Alexan Tarpon River project would be 14 stories taller than the maximum building height allowed under Fort Lauderdale’s Downtown Master Plan, be a traffic nightmare and put extreme pressure on our crumbling sewer system. We can’t let this happen! This Monday, May 14 at 4 p.m. ET, Vice Mayor Ben Sorensen is hosting his District 4 Discussion and allowing the Alexan-Tarpon River development team to present their plans for discussion, feedback and questions. This is a great opportunity to make our presence felt just one day before the crucial City Commission vote. Join us in the 8th Floor cafeteria of City Hall (100 N. Andrews Ave.) this Monday, May 14. at 4 p.m. ET! For more information, contact us at [email protected]

Alexan-Tarpon River Would Devastate Smoker Park

On May 15, Fort Lauderdale commissioners will hold a public hearing and vote on a 22-story tower – Alexan-Tarpon River – that would have a devastating impact on the ancient live oaks on Smoker Park, as the park would be wedged between two high-rise buildings if the project moves forward. That would cast a shadow over the oak trees, which depend on sunlight to survive. Rio Vista residents would also be impacted by shadows from the high-rise later in the afternoon, when the suns moves westerly. If you want to protect our precious green space and trees, contact Concerned Citizens for Preservation of Our Neighborhood at [email protected]

Alexan-Tarpon River Would Create Traffic Bottleneck!

Join us at Fort Lauderdale City Hall on May 15, when city commissioners hold a public hearing and vote on the 22-story Alexan-Tarpon River residential building at 501 SE Sixth Ave. If approved, Alexan-Tarpon would bring hundreds of new residents who would have to use the narrow service road next to the Henry E. Kinney Tunnel. The limited access and existing congestion in the neighborhood would make this a traffic disaster! Concerned Citizens for Preservation of Our Neighborhood is determined to stop commissioners from allowing this to happen. Contact us at [email protected] to see how you can help.

Stop Alexan-Tarpon River!

Concerned Citizens for Preservation of Our Neighborhood (CCPON) is comprised of many residents of surrounding buildings in Downtown Fort Lauderdale. Our goal is to work collectively to oppose the 22-story Alexan-Tarpon River (“The Project”) that would put more pressure on the infrastructure, create even more traffic congestion and make it harder for emergency service personnel to respond to calls in a timely fashion.

On May 15, 2018, at Fort Lauderdale City Hall (100 N. Andrews Ave.), a public hearing (“Hearing”) will be held before the Mayor and Commissioners to determine whether or not to approve Alexan-Tarpon. The May 15 Hearing will be the ONLY opportunity for residents to convince the new administration that approving this project would be a slap in the face of the voters who elected them with the promise of reining in the city’s unprecedented development wave and protecting our infrastructure and neighborhoods.

Concerned Citizens for Preservation of Our Neighborhood will be well-represented and in full-force at the Hearing. But, WE NEED YOUR SUPPORT!

Please join us at Fort Lauderdale City Hall (100 N. Andrews Ave.) on Tuesday, May 15, 2018, at 6 p.m. EDT.
