Most people who move to the UAE for work understand, in a general way, that their residence visa is connected to their employer. Very few think about what that actually means until the day it starts to matter.
It means your right to live in the country is tied to a job. If that job ends, whether you resigned, were let go, or simply did not pass probation, your residency status changes as a direct result. Your home, your bank account, your children’s school place and your ability to stay in the country all sit downstream of that one connection.
This is not a reason to avoid working in the UAE, and hundreds of thousands of people manage it without drama every year. It is a reason to understand the mechanics before you need them, because the worst time to learn how something works is in the middle of it going wrong.
Your Employer Sponsors Your Residency
The basic structure is that your employer sponsors your residence visa and holds your work permit. You are not a resident who happens to have a job. You are a resident because you have that job.
When employment ends, the employer is responsible for cancelling the work permit and the associated residence visa. That cancellation is a formal process, and it starts a clock.
