A nine-year-old should never have to tell his mother she has cancer.

It still happens. Not because anyone is careless, but because the appointment is running late, no interpreter is available, and the child is right there and speaks English.

Federal rules are clear. Relying on a minor to interpret is prohibited, except briefly in a genuine emergency while a qualified interpreter is found.

But the rule exists because of the harm, not the other way around.

The child carries that conversation for the rest of their life. The parent loses the dignity of hearing their own diagnosis from a professional. And the clinician never really knows what was understood.
