Finding the right candidate is only half the job.

You still must keep them interested.

I have watched companies lose good candidates because there was too much time between conversations, feedback took too long, or nobody was quite sure who was supposed to make the next call.

This does not mean you need to rush a hiring decision.

It means candidates should know where they stand.

If a strong candidate interviews this week, do not disappear until the following week.

A simple update can make a difference.

When qualified construction professionals have options, your hiring process becomes part of your recruiting strategy.

The market slowed.

So did qualified construction candidates suddenly become easier to find?

Not exactly.

Demand has shifted between markets, project types and specialties, but experienced construction professionals with strong track records are still valuable.

And that means good candidates may have more leverage than they realize.

The important part is knowing what to do with it.

One of the biggest changes I have seen in commercial construction over the years is not the way projects are built—it is the way people build their careers.

It wasn't uncommon for professionals to spend their entire careers in one city or one region.

Today, experienced project managers, superintendents, estimators, and executives are much more open to relocating if it means joining the right company or working on the right projects.

This is changing the hiring landscape for everyone.

Companies have access to a broader talent pool, while professionals have more opportunities than ever before. The challenge for both is making the right long-term decision—not simply the next one.

How has construction recruiting changed in your market over the past decade?

More commercial construction professionals are considering relocation as opportunities continue to grow throughout the Southeast.

But a successful move is about more than finding a new job—or a bigger paycheck.

The right company, leadership team, project pipeline, culture, and long-term career potential can make all the difference.

If you've ever considered relocating for your career, these are some of the things worth thinking about before making the move.

Regional growth is changing more than skylines—it is changing hiring practices.

When one market experiences rapid growth, contractors often find themselves competing for talent far beyond their own backyard.

Companies that consistently attract experienced professionals understand that recruiting has become regional, not local.

As construction continues to evolve, successful hiring will depend on more than filling positions. It will depend on building relationships and earning a reputation as an employer of choice.

Do you think construction recruiting has become regional, or is hiring still primarily a local effort in your area?

There's a lot of noise online.

My goal isn't to add to it.

Once a month, I share what we're seeing in the commercial construction market—hiring trends, career insights, and observations that may help you make better decisions, whether you're hiring or considering your next move.

If that sounds useful, I'd be glad to have you on the list.

Commercial construction growth across the Southeast is creating opportunities—but it's also increasing competition for experienced talent.

Project managers, superintendents, estimators, and executives have more options, and they're increasingly looking beyond their local markets.

For contractors, a strong construction hiring strategy now means communicating clearly, moving efficiently, and giving qualified candidates a reason to choose your company.

The South continues to lead the nation in population growth.

According to the U.S. Census Bureau, the fastest growing state from July 2024 to July 2025 was South Carolina. North Carolina ranked third. Both states' growth was driven largely by domestic migration.

Population growth often signals economic expansion, increased development, and continued demand for commercial construction.

For construction professionals, this creates more opportunities. For contractors, it can mean increased competition for experienced talent.
