The best counteroffer is the one you never have to consider.

If a raise, a promotion, or "we'll fix it" only shows up once you're halfway out the door, that's not retention. That's damage control. The companies that keep great people never let it get to that conversation in the first place.

I've watched this play out from both sides more times than I can count. The offer that comes too late rarely changes what made someone start looking.

Here is what I have learned after nearly a decade inside executive search: a counteroffer is rarely a fix. It is usually a pause button on the same conversation you were already having with yourself about whether this role still fits.🫡

The raise does not solve the lack of growth. The new title does not solve the culture. And the timeline for "things will be different" almost never holds once the resignation letter is off the table.

If you are the one weighing a counteroffer, ask yourself why it took you walking out the door for the offer to show up in the first place.🙌

The path to a successful business is not a straight line. Mine ran through a decade of rooms I had to earn my way into.☺️

Success in business is built in an order most people try to skip. First you master a craft, and that takes years, not months. Then you build relationships, one conversation at a time, long before you need them. Then you set a standard and refuse to lower it, even when lowering it would be faster money. Only then does the version everyone sees, the wins, the growth, the name on the door, start to show up.👏

Today is the day! This afternoon at 1 PM, I'm officially cutting the ribbon on MDC Executive Search at the Boca Chamber, and I would love for you to be there to celebrate with me.

The biggest hiring mistake has nothing to do with who you choose. It is how long you take to choose. 🤝

The best candidate in your search is also the best candidate in three other searches, and elite people are off the market in about a week. A six week process does not make you thorough, it makes you late. ☺️

The SWIB luncheon at Boca Grove Country Club was everything: a room full of women building real things, honest conversations, and Boston Proper sharing their story and doing interviews right here in our own backyard.
