Austin lost one of its most magical landmarks today.

Malin’s Fountain, the 18 foot troll hidden inside Pease Park, reportedly burned down early this morning. The sculpture was created by Danish artist Thomas Dambo with the help of more than 150 Austin volunteers and had quickly become one of the city’s most loved public art installations.

If you ever visited her, you probably remember the way she sat quietly in the trees holding a bowl of water meant to remind people to care for wildlife during Austin’s brutal summers. She was built mostly from recycled and repurposed materials, including reclaimed wood from UT’s J.J. Pickle Research Campus.

People brought their kids there. Took out of town visitors there. Walked the trail just to see her tucked away in the woods.

Seeing something that brought so much joy to the city disappear overnight is heartbreaking.

No official cause has been confirmed yet.

The Drop In is back at the Long Center starting May 21 with free Thursday night concerts all summer long featuring local bands, skyline views, food trucks, drinks, and one of the best outdoor setups in the city.

The concerts happen on the Long Center’s outdoor stage overlooking Lady Bird Lake and Downtown Austin, and it’s the kind of event that makes you remember why people love summers here so much.

Bring a blanket or lawn chair, show up early for sunset, and make a night out of it. It’s family friendly, dog friendly, and an easy addition to your Austin summer bucket list.
