🚨 🎵 **BREAKING IN MUSIC** 🎵
The way records make the charts just changed.
IFPI — the organization representing the recording industry worldwide — is rolling out AI eligibility rules across its global network of official music charts. Per Music Business Worldwide, the framework was built first by a coalition of music companies: the majors (Sony, Universal, Warner) alongside a lineup of independents including HYBE, Partisan, and Mom+Pop.
Here’s the line they drew. A record made with AI can chart only if it clears three core checks:
1️⃣ Any AI service used is properly authorized and lawful
2️⃣ The track is substantially human-made
3️⃣ It doesn’t raise stream or chart manipulation concerns
It’s already live on the charts IFPI runs directly — across the Middle East, Southeast Asia, South Africa, and Latin America — with plans to extend to more than 20 additional charts worldwide, including Australia, France, Germany, and South Korea, to name a few.
Victoria Oakley, CEO of IFPI, put it plainly: *”AI is evolving rapidly and it’s critical that the music community takes the lead on how to ensure technology and human artistry grow together responsibly.”*
So read the room: the industry isn’t banning the tool. It’s drawing a line. Human hands stay at the center, or the record doesn’t count.
