MFA Thesis Abstract

Storytelling is one of the most powerful tools for effecting positive social change. A compelling story could move an audience, to make them grasp truths that might otherwise escape them. And with animation, volatile topics such as social inequality and discrimination could be, approached gently and simplified.

Tings Brown, a 2D animated docufiction vlog series, was conceptualized to highlight snippets of social inequalities that drives citizens from developing countries such as Guyana into emigrating. Guyana, the only English-speaking country in South America, has a population of under 800,000 people, and is steadily losing it human capital to brain drain – annually.

Full Disclosure is the pilot episode of the animated vlog which follows a Transgender Guyanese woman, who flees religious and political persecution in Guyana to seek asylum in the United States but then ends up in similar circumstances in her new home. She is left with the dilemma of either staying silent, speaking up or returning to Guyana.
