Tech companies announced 149,023 job cuts from January through July 2026, up 67% year over year (Challenger, Gray & Christmas). That's nearly 1 in 3 of all U.S. cuts announced this year

What are you trading your freedom for?

Someone who did everything right put it plainly: he did his corporate job exactly as he was told. Then his division was shut down.

"I sacrificed a lot of flexibility and freedom for something that's not there anymore. I should have moved on before I was forced to move on."

Median time with one employer is 3.9 years, the lowest since 2002. For workers 25 to 34: 2.7 years (BLS, Employee Tenure).

So the "safe" path has an exit date you don't control, and that exit costs half a year or more.

Should one meeting a year decide what you're worth?

For most people, it does. Raise, bonus, promotion, whether you're "on track" all bundled into one conversation nobody enjoys.

Gallup surveyed 135 chief HR officers at global Fortune 500 companies. Just 2% strongly agreed their performance management system inspires employees to improve. Only 2 in 10 said reviews are fair, transparent, or motivating.

So the system doesn't work. The people running it know it. And it still sets your pay. You can't fix that system. You can decide how much power it holds over your life.
