Muhairwe Education Trust Education and Scholarship MESSAGE FROM FOUNDER

Welcome to the Muhairwe Education Trust Limited (METL). Together we are making a difference.

METL is a non-profit organization that was set up to give hope to the disadvantaged children through higher education and research. We focus on higher education and research because we know that these areas are fundamental prerequisites of sustainable economic development and a sure way of supporting any country’s efforts to secure a bright future for its citizens. Our belief is that every child,

not only needs to have basic school education (primary and secondary education), but also needs to complete tertiary education to qualify for gainful employment. We therefore aim at facilitating as many disadvantaged and deserving children as possible, in advancing their education after secondary school. As demonstrated in our Vision, “to be a model beam of hope for the underprivileged”, we are teaming up with partners around the world to make this dream a reality. We are optimists and believe that by focusing on our goals and working with our partners, we can help the disadvantaged children to get the chance to live a better and productive life. The Trust is completely dependent on private voluntary support and is run by committed volunteers who are honest, caring and compassionate to the cause of the Trust. I would like to take this opportunity to extend SPECIAL THANKS to those who have made contributions in whatever form to support our efforts. Dr. William Tsimwa Muhairwe
Executive Founder

The Ugandan government introduced Universal Primary Education and Universal Secondary Education as part of its policy to provide free education in every family. However education after secondary education is prohibitively expensive and the majority of children would never get the chance to continue their education. This in turn means that they have no qualifications and therefore struggle to get any meaningful employment and continue in the vicious circle of poverty. The METL aims at improving this situation by offering disadvantaged children with an opportunity to advance their career at higher institutions of learning and also promote research. This is believed to be the most effective way of supporting development though education and showing faith and confidence in the country’s great future.

“Now that you have graduated, do not expect life on a silver platter. Look out for the opportunities even with the little money you might have,” he told the graduands who completed degrees in Law, Engineering as well as Commerce from Makerere, Uganda Christian University, Kyambogo University as well as Mbarara University of Science and Technology. “I came from a very poor background so I know what it means to grow up in the village and struggle. You can make it. Everyone can make it. Do not sit there and expect jobs from the government.”

His message was echoed by Sheema South Member of Parliament Yorokamu Katwiremu Bategana, who advised Ugandan youth to change their work ethic in order to succeed in life.
“We need to stop the culture of begging. Now that you have completed university, use your brains and hands to better yourself,” he said. Dr Muhairwe also called upon well-wishers to support the fund so that more bright students are helped. Already, the second batch of beneficiaries has enrolled at different universities across the country.
