This past June, award winning jewellery designer Beverley Smith and her 3 associates returned to Uganda for the third time to continue working with the Lacan Kwite Group, whom they have been working with since 2008. These beautiful, individual pieces of art are a testament to the resilience, determination, and creative skills of the 36 individuals who have endured 25 years of chaos. While each person bears a unique story of hardship, the Lacan Kwinte group is now creating a brighter future for its members through the art of jewellery creation.

How are they made?

To make the bead, they roll the paper tightly around a small stick (to
create a hole for threading) and glue the pointed end. It is important
that they are rolled tightly to ensure a quality product.

The beads are then strung on a string
and dipped in sealant called Mukica Blue, is specially made for sealing
paper beads and is low odour and eco friendly.
After a several staged process of
sealing and drying the beads that takes about a week, the beads are
restrung to make bracelets, necklaces and earrings. Finally, before
being shipped every strand is inspected for defects and if a bad bead is
seen, the whole necklace is restrung. The women are proud of their
work, and are committed to making beautiful and original products.

Meet the beaders: Christine Bai

Christine Bay is the treasurer of the Lacan Kwinte group. She is currently caring for 7 children, 3 of which are hers and 4
are orphans. Christine has plans to utilize the increased markets for
the group's products to provide more structure to the group and hopefully
grow it in the near future. The most important thing to Christine is her children, and the money that she gets from beading is used largely to pay the school fees for her children.

This is the Lacan Kwinte beading group, a growing collective of craftspeople near Kampala, Uganda. The group started in the Karimbe internally displaced peoples (IDP) camp, however recently many families have been able to move back to their homes. The group still meets regularly to make beads, share stories and provide support.

100% of profits form the sale of beads is returned into the community either through direct sales of beads or community support programs developed by our partner company AVSI, who has a 20 year history of work in the area.
